Recap / The Interns S 7 E 19

Go To

Gleb, Semyon and Phil must move to new apartment... but now, there are two rooms for them three. Interns must decide who would take a separate room, with the other two sharing a second one. Since no one can convince the other two that he must live separately, they tries the other ways to decide. When money flipping fails, they choses to ask Bykov to judge them. Bykov offers three challenges, only for each intern to win exactly one round. Realising that there's a draw, Bykov orders interns to sit, and gives the room to Lobanov, who sits separately.

David feels uncomfortable about Varya discussing their relationship with Lyuba, and Varya starts suspecting that he hates her, for some reason. This hostility is mutual, since Lyuba dislikes him in turn. Lyuba, when pressed, tells Varya a story about one young nurse (who was in love with David) who got drunk on a party, and David took her with him; Lyuba has no information how it ended, but soon after that, the nurse quit her job, and she thinks that it's related. Since then, she hates David. But David has completely different view on the same events, which shows Lyuba in bad light. When Varya learns about this, she suggests to help and stop their three years-long hatred. When Varya leaves, the two remembers that the true story was something else, and neither wants for Varya to know it.

Kisegach wants to speak with Kupitman, like friend with a friend, but he has no time: one private clinic invites Kupitman to work for them, with much better salary. Kisegach agrees to raise his salary, but that clinic is not so easy to give up and offers Kupitman more and more — forcing him to ask for more from Kisegach. But he presses his luck too much, and eventually she refuses to provide him with anything. He decides to take the clinic's offer... only to learn that it operates in province — which was what Kisegach was trying to tell him.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Call-Back: Phil and Gleb walking around naked is amongst the arguments Semyon tries to use in favour of living in a separate room.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Phil tries to insist that floor cleaning challenge is humiliating; they are doctors, for god's sake! Bykov ignores him.
  • Failure Is the Only Option: Gleb, Semyon and Phil have apartment with two rooms; now, they must decide who would take the separate room (the other two would share the second room). But everything they tries fails to actually decide.
    • At first, they're just arguing, with each intern trying to come up with arguments in his favour (or against the other two). Phil believes that since Gleb and Semyon knows each other for longer, and they're both smokers, they should live together. Gleb believes that he should live separately simply cause he's the only one who can bring girls. And Semyon... again tries to play "I served in the army" card, and, when it fails, brings up the nudist incident from the previous episode. Each time, the other two disagrees with such "logic".
    • Bykov tries to force interns to do three challenges — treating patients, cleaning floor and give Bykov a gift; each intern wins exactly once — Phil, Semyon and Gleb, in that order. Bykov then just gives the room to Lobanov, basing it on Insane Troll Logic.
  • Greedy Jew: Had Kupitman knew when to stop, he likely would've actually received those bonuses from Kisegach. But he's too greedy, and instead asks for more — and more — until Kisegach gets angry and refuse to provide him anything. He then tries to take the clinic's offer... only to learn that it operates not in Moscow, but in provincial town which he has no interest in (and had he bothered to speak with Anastasia in the beginning, he would have know about that little detail beforehand).
  • Insane Troll Logic:
    • When Phil wins the first round of Bykov's challenge (treat the patient quicker than the other interns), and Semyon botches it completely, Gleb tries to argue that the room must belong to him, cause it's only logical to put the "best one" with the "worst one", to help him out. Lobanov instantly recognises that he was called "dumb", with predictable reaction.
    • When each intern wins exactly one round of his challenge, Bykov just orders them to sit, and gives the room to Lobanov, basing it on him sitting separately.
  • Let Us Never Speak of This Again: When Lobanov uses Phil and Gleb walking around home naked as the reason why he wouldn't live in the same room with them, Gleb says that they have agreed to never bring it up again.
  • Non-Gameplay Elimination: Inverted. Since Bykov has only three challenges (for three interns), and they received one victory each, Bykov gets forced to use the first excuse he could find to declare Lobanov a victor (because he was the only one to sit separately).
  • Questionable Consent: Lyuba hates David since the story with one (now quitted) nurse who was in love with him; she got drunk on party, and David took her with him, likely for selfish reasons. Lyuba has no confirmation, but soon after that nurse quit her job. Fortunately, thats not how story actually happened.
  • "Rashomon"-Style: Lyuba and David have a different view on the same events, involving a nurse who was in love with David, but since quit the job after something bad that happened on the party:
    • According to Lyuba, David took that nurse with him after she got drunk, likely with intent to take advantage of her. Lyuba has no confirmation, but soon after that nurse quit her job.
    • According to David, the nurse was just an excuse to leave the party; he never did anything to her. Why he leaved? Because drunk Lyuba tried to hit on him. Her hatred is simple jealousy and resentment, and his "amoral actions" are just Lyuba trying to excuse her resentment.
    • When Varya leaves, David reminds Lyuba that both their stories were incomplete. In fact, drunk Lyuba aggressively harassed David. They agrees to keep it hidden.
  • Rule of Three: There're three rounds in Bykov's challenge to decide who of interns would receive that separate room. Unfortunately, there're also three interns, and each one wins, fails and utterly fails exactly one round (Phil is best medic, but makes worst gift; Semyon is best floor-cleaner, but botches medical task; Gleb does poor job when cleaning floor, but makes best gift).
  • You Didn't Ask: "Elite clinic's" agent which tries to hire Kupitman never mentions that this clinic operates in a provincial town far away from Moscow until the very end. He actually gets surprised that Kupitman has any issues with this, and feels insulted by his negative reaction.
