Recap / The Interns S 5 E 7

Go To

Bykov wants to learn Phil's weaknesses, so he can exploit them. He sends Kupitman to learn more about Phil. Kupitman, in attempts to come along, pretends to be maximally weird (always in perverted way), hoping that it would make Phil more comfortable to reveal his own dirty secrets; it doesn't, as Kupitman's behaviour just squicks him out. Ultimately, Kupitman gives up and just asks him directly, and Phil reveals that he has two fathers. Unfortunately for Kupitman, Phil feels nothing to be ashamed of, so it's of no use for Bykov, and Kupitman must find something else. But Kupitman learns that while Phil loves his parents, he still faced horrible abuse in the past from homophobic peers (and even one principal), which forced him to changing schools on regular basis. And now Bykov tries to start it all over again. Kupitman decides to withhold that information from Bykov (who now thinks that it doesn't work), knowing that he would just continue that abuse, even if it means losing the bet.

Varya finally appears in the hospital... and she is wasted. And she intends to continue drinking, because she can't forget Gleb. Now Lyuba must hide her from Bykov... and replace her for a day, otherwise he would find out. But she fails to cover her tracks and Bykov learns anyway. Lyuba wastes his time in attempts to cover for Varya, but then Varya herself appears and tells him the truth, since she is tired of lying. Bykov is so shocked, he doesn't even know what to do with them.

Semyon must make Irina forgive him, and he needs Gleb's help. Gleb has an idea: he would pretend to harass Irina, and Semyon would "save" her, winning her respect. Unfortunately, after their first attempt, she learns from Kisegach that Gleb is Semyon's friend, and realises that this is their scheme.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Camp Gay: Invoked by Kupitman, who acts maximally weird and eccentric (in perverted way), in attempt to make Phil reveal his dirty secrets (for Bykov to exploit); the stories he tells Phil ranges from his love for crossdressing to him actually having sex with a transvestist even after learning that he's male, or showing him a collection of perverse porn he watches right in his office. It all fails, and he has to ask directly, to which Phil replies that he has two fathers.
Kupitman: It required sacrificing the reputation of a sane man, but it's worth it.
  • The Bet: Kupitman agrees to learn more about Phil, and claims that he only needs two hours to do so, or he would lose five thousands roubles to Bykov. Kupitman brings him the information about Phil's two fathers, but since Phil doesn't consider this to be something to be ashamed of, the bet is still not over and Kupitman must bring something more worthwhile. Kupitman learns that Phil had, in fact, faced abuse for having gay fathers, and decides to hide this information from Bykov, at the cost of losing the bet.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Lobanov just can't recognise that Gleb is joking about hitting on Irina to mess with him, and later, when Irina drags Gleb into an elevator (when their "plan" backfires), he mistakes this for him really trying to "steal" Irina and once they exists the elevator, hits Gleb into face.
  • Did You Think I Can't Feel?: While Phil didn't react to Bykov's provocations, to deprive him of his "victory", he was harmed by them. In fact, despite him still loving his dads, just the fact of him living with two fathers was enough to force him to change six schools back in his childhood because of other kids (and at least one principal) abusing him. And when his first girlfriend dumped him, she gifted him... her dress. After telling this, Phil breaks into crying. Kupitman keeps that information to himself, knowing that Bykov would continue his abuse if he learns that it works.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: Varya's absence in the previous episode gets explained as her being too busy drinking to deal with her breakup with Gleb. Now, she finally appears... while still being drunk. And she has no plans to stop drinking, even if it does not work to stop her grief.
  • Engineered Heroism: Gleb's plan involves him harassing Irina, so Semyon could "save" her and win her respect back. Plan fails because she immediately goes to Kisegach, where she learns about Gleb's friendship with Lobanov, and comes to the right conclusions. When they attempts this again, she pretends to fall for Gleb's "flirting", and even starts flirting back. Then she takes him to the elevator and locks them there, forcing Gleb to explain everything. Then jealous Semyon, who immediately jumps to conclusion that Gleb tries to "steal" his girl, hits Gleb in the face as soon as he exits the elevator.
  • Kick the Dog: Bykov always was a shameless troll, but his "jokes" about Phil's fathers are just of below-the-waist level of cruelty (and Phil later confirms that they did hurt, even if he didn't let him know it).
  • Pet the Dog: When Phil tells him just how he was really harmed by Bykov's cruel jokes about his fathers, Kupitman listens to his story (which helps Phil to deal with his sadness), and refuses to tell details to Bykov, keeping to (now disproved) position that Phil sees nothing wrong and shameful with his family, even if it means he'd lost his bet to Bykov.
  • Spotting the Thread: Lyuba almost manages to hide Varya's absence from Bykov... but she just can't resist temptation to feed the patient with her self-made pies. When patient mentions it, Bykov instantly realises who was really here. Then, as a "finishing blow", the patient repeats Lyuba's Catchphrase and mentions that she is an enthusiastic gossiper.
  • Stepford Smiler: After his discussion with Phil, Kupitman learns that Phil was risen by gay couple. He tells this to Bykov, who decides to use it against Phil to make fun at him, but fails, because Phil doesn't fall for such obvious provocation (and because he sees nothing wrong with his family). Except, Phil only acted like he doesn't care to deprive Bykov of his victory, but he was harmed by this: as he reveals to Kupitman, he was abused for having two fathers all his life, starting from school. Kupitman withholds that part from Bykov, even at the cost of losing the bet, knowing that Bykov would jump on the abuse train.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: When Bykov leaves, Phil tells Kupitman that it was a dick move from him (especially since he considered Kupitman to be his friend when he told him) to tell Bykov about Phil's fathers, because people like Bykov can and would exploit this to harm his feelings. This is the likely reason why Kupitman preserved the rest of the story in secret, even at the cost of losing the bet.
