Recap / The Interns S 5 E 20

Go To

Lyuba finds lost money (and good money, for that matter), but can't just spend them right away: it's a bad omen, other people's money would bring other people's problems. She must change them for other money with the same nominal, so it would be the "same sum, other money"... but no one has enough to help her. Unknowingly to her, those money were lost by no one other than Kisegach. Meanwhile, Varya learns that Gleb is really low on money, but is too proud to ask, no matter how dire the situation is. She decides to give him money anyway, by asking one of Gleb's patients to do it, disguising it as a bribing attempt... only for patient to just steal the money. When Varya learns about it, she cooperates with Gleb to threaten the patient with a big lavement (only to do it even after he gives money back). Unfortunately, that's when Kisegach learns about her loss, and accuses Gleb of stealing. His name only gets cleared by Lyuba, who explains how she found the banknote in the first place.

Lobanov's new patient is a wife of his old professor... who remembers him as a hopelessly dumb and potentially lethal. And now he is dead set to kick him out of this hospital, unless he proves that he'd improved since their last meeting. For Bykov, it quickly becomes a matter of personal pride, since professor started doubting his skills as a mentor. To everyone's surprise, Lobanov passes his professor's exam... but then he reveals to Bykov that he cheated via hidden earpiece (thanks to Phil).

This episode provides examples of:

  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: In the end, Bykov, to summarise his work so far, asks each intern what they think about their mentorship... and each intern, one by one, thanks him for believing in them and his hard work in order to teach them everything. Including Gleb and Semyon, who have not exactly stellar relationship with their boss (especially Gleb).
  • Book Dumb: Lobanov's lack of adequate education comes to bite him in the ass when he meets his old professor, who considers him to be totally incompetent, and thinks that Lobanov must be fired. In fact, Lobanov only graduated (with the worst passable grade) because he promised to never, ever practice medicine. So of course the professor is not happy when he realises that his worst student would treat his wife.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Those money Kisegach had lost in the beginning of the episode, while crucial to Lyuba's plot, also becomes relevant in Gleb's plot much later, when Kisegach realises that she had lost those money, and remembers that Gleb not long ago paid her a visit, and he held her purse. And when Lyuba gives him that same banknote later, Gleb's chances to clear his name become astronomically low...
  • Chekhov's Gunman: At first, it seems that Phil (who spent a full episode, not counting the ending, in futile attempt to find something to eat) is irrelevant to this episode. But in the end, he plays a crucial role in Lobanov's plot, as he helps him to cheat on his "exam".
  • Greedy Jew: Once Kupitman learns that Lyuba had found some good money, he tries to persuade her into just giving them to him, several times.
  • I'm Standing Right Here: When Lobanov starts discussing that his new patient has the same surname as his old professor, whom everyone hated, because he was a total asshole, he realises too late that said professor stands right behind him and can hear everything, and Semyon's patient is this professor's wife.
  • It's Personal: When Lobanov's old professor starts questioning Bykov's own competence as a mentor, since Lobanov somehow managed to become worse under his leadership, Bykov realises that he must help Semyon to win: his own professional pride is at a stake.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: That patient who stole Varya's money when she asked him for a favour? He later receives lavement from Gleb, as a punishment.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Varya once again creates elaborate (and not working) scheme to avoid telling something directly. While Gleb did refuse to lean money from her at first, he quickly realises that he has no other alternatives... but by this point, she wasted all her money, because she tried to ask Gleb's patient to give those money as a "bribe" (which he stole). And she doesn't realise this during her dialogue with Gleb, thinking that he is just too greedy. She learns the truth later, however.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Phil has almost no screen time in this episode (save for his periodic futile attempts to order food, which are unrelated to any of the plotlines), but it's him who helps Lobanov to pass his "exam" in the end of his plot.
  • Smart Ball: At the last moment, Lobanov manages to prove to his old professor that he is, in fact, competent, by passing his exam flawlessly. Except, he cheated via earpiece, with Phil's help.
