Recap / The Interns S 5 E 16

Go To

Gleb's lack of money finally starts affecting his life, and he no longer can share with Semyon, which leads them to conflict. They divides everything in the apartment, from food to toilet paper, based on who has paid for what, and Gleb starts demanding that Semyon must pay his debts (15K roubles, while Semyon rarely has even one thousand). Semyon manages to collect required sum, by pledging his wife's wedding ring. When Gleb reacts with surprise that he chose his wife's ring, Semyon tells him that he now has no wife... no debts... and no friend. Gleb realises that he was a jerk, and buys the ring back... only to learn that Semyon never pledged it, and the money was leaned from his old school buddy; it was just his joke on Gleb. They laughs at this situation and proceeds to eat.

Lyuba wants to adhere the dance lessons, and needs a partner (at least a temporal one, until she finds somebody else). But Bykov refuses her immediately (on the ground that he'd suffered a mental trauma in childhood when he was forced by his parents to learn how to dance, and hates dancing ever since). Meanwhile, Kupitman makes a facial out of food for himself. Bykov initially mocks him, but then decides to join. Unfortunately, Lyuba busts them, and now demands Bykov's cooperation, on the threat of revealing what she just saw to everyone. Bykov complies to Lyuba's demands, but she then tells everyone... about their dancing sessions, and now everyone starts mocking him. In attempt to shift their attention, Bykov leads interns to Kupitman... but everyone starts complimenting Kupitman instead (the only one who doesn't, Lobanov, still finds Bykov's dancing lessons to be funnier). And then Kupitman remembers how Bykov used those facials himself, after which everyone bursts into laugh.

Phil want to write an article for Russian-language medical journal, and needs editor to proof-read his material. He asks Varya for help... and when Bykov (who previously told her that she is hopelessly dumb) sees this, he mistakes her for article's author, and she fails to tell him otherwise. Fortunately, Phil comes to conclusion that they're working on the same article, and Varya plays along by suggesting to drop "her" article, with Phil instead suggesting to coauthor it.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Analogy Backfire: When Gleb refuses to loan him cigarette, Semyon calls him a "bug" (meaning that he is cheap). Gleb replies by comparing him to a locust.
  • Backstab Backfire: When Lyuba doesn't bother with keeping their dancing session secret, Bykov backstabs Kupitman by telling everyone about his Cucumber Facial. This makes Bykov's situation worse, as interns sides with Kupitman, while Kupitman reveals that Bykov not just tried it himself, but actually liked it, which makes everyone laugh at Bykov.
  • Blackmail: Lyuba threatens Bykov with telling everyone about his and Kupitman's Cucumber Facial, unless he goes with her on the dancing lessons. He does this, and she keeps the secret about the facial... but tells everyone about their dancing lessons, which leads to Romanenko and Lobanov starting mocking Bykov for that instead. Why? Because they never discussed that this must be kept secret, too.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Kupitman and his Cucumber Facial? Bykov later attempts to use him to distract everyone's mockery from himself. Not only it fails, it makes his situation look even sillier.
  • Cucumber Facial: Kupitman, ever worrying about his fading beauty, constructs cucumber facial for himself. When Bykov starts mocking him for this, he persuades him to try by himself, which Bykov actually likes. Unfortunately, Lyuba notices them and now they're in danger to become everyone's laughingstock. In the end, Bykov does become everyone's laughingstock — not for this, but because Lyuba has told everyone about their dancing session, forcing him to backstab Kupitman in attempt to switch their attention to him and his facial; it fails, because interns starts complimenting Kupitman instead (and Lobanov thinks that Bykov's dancing sessions are just funnier anyway)... and then Kupitman makes the finishing blow by mentioning that Bykov previously used those too, and liked it, which makes everyone burst into laugh.
  • Dumb Blonde: Bykov considers Varya to be so dumb and incompetent, she's not worth yelling at, because it would not change anything. He even directly compares her to Lobanov, in Lobanov's favour.
  • Epic Fail:
    • Phil needs an editor for (Russian-language) article which he plans to send to a medical journal. He asks Varya for help. The very first thing she notices is that he mistook "pechen" (liver) and "pechenie" (cookie). After reading entire article, Varya tells Phil that she found five-six mistakes... in every sentence.
    • Bykov's attempts to switch everyone's mockery from himself to Kupitman (after interns learns about his dancing session with Lyuba). Gleb and Varya compliments Kupitman, Phil tells that he uses those himself, and Semyon considers that Bykov's dancing is still funnier. Then Kupitman mentions that Bykov used those facials, too, and he liked it, which leads to everyone laughing at Bykov.
  • False Reassurance:
Phil: So, Varya, how many mistakes you found in my article?
Varya: Well, five-six... [Phil Smiles] ...In every sentence. [Smile drops]
  • Freudian Excuse: Bykov hates dancing because he was forced to attain dancing lessons agains his will in childhood. It was so bad, Bykov claims that it gave him a mental trauma.
  • Imagine Spot: Every time Varya tries to tell Bykov (or Phil) something important about that article, it only occurs in her mind. When she returns to reality, she for one reason or another doesn't tell them anything.
  • Irony: Lyuba had no idea that she can use that Cucumber Facial to blackmail Bykov into becoming her dancing partner (since she sees nothing unusual in it) until he mentioned it, and specified that he needs it hidden.
  • Jerkass: Now, when he's low on money, Gleb starts acting much ruder to Semyon, despite them being best friends, and even insists that Semyon must pay his debts (15K roubles) back, knowing full well that he can't afford it. This almost ruins their friendship.
  • This Is My Side: Since now both Gleb and Semyon are low on money, they, after a brief conflict about Gleb refusing to share with Semyon, starts dividing everything in their apartments based on who has paid for what, from food to toilet paper.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Bykov interrupts Varya before she manages to explain that she edits an article for Phil, not for herself (he thinks that this is a good sign that she may indeed start developing some skills for once), and she fails to explain it out of fear that he would think that she is, indeed, hopeless. She later fails to warn Phil about this, too, or explain that she is not trying to steal his work for herself.
  • Stealing the Credit: Phil mistakes Varya for trying to steal his work, because she, for whatever reason, failed to inform Bykov that she only edited Phil's article, not wrote her own.
  • Take a Third Option: When Varya fails to inform Bykov about not being the author of that article, and only its editor (which would mean, he would be completely disappointed in her), and fails to explain to Phil why Bykov thinks that she is the author, Phil comes to conclusion that they works on the same topic, and may simply become coauthors.
  • Unmanly Secret: Bykov does not react well when Lyuba tells everyone about their dancing session, as he considers it extremely humiliating. Gleb and Semyon indeed mocks him for that, with Lobanov outright saying that it's even funnier than Kupitman's Cucumber Facial.
  • Wham Line: When Gleb demands that Semyon must pay up his debts — 15K roubles, not exactly little sum, let alone for somebody like Lobanov, who only managed to collect it by pledging Olga's wedding ring — Lobanov tells him that he has "no wife, no friend, and no debts", and wishes him farewell. However, it later turns out that Semyon never pledged his ring, and all of this was to force Gleb to realise that he's a jerk, and apologise.
  • You Didn't Ask: Lyuba tells everyone about her and Bykov's dancing session because she thought that there's nothing to be ashamed of, and asks him why he didn't just warn her to keep it hidden. He responds by telling her that it's so obvious, he is surprised she didn't realise by herself.
