Recap / The Interns S 1 E 18

Go To

Varya comes to work with a strong hangover and alcohol smell (Lyuba even initially mistakes her for Kupitman). When Lyuba tries to learn about Varya's date with Gleb, it turns out that Varya has no memory of whether they did that or not. Lyuba, believing that Gleb already told everything to Semyon, in all details, tries to ask Lobanov, unaware that Gleb actually refused to answer him. When Semyon doesn't tell her, Lyuba tries to send Levin, which makes Gleb learn about her attempts. Meanwhile, Bykov, angry at Gleb for escaping from night shift the previous night, tries to get Kisegach fire him for his incompetence and rudeness. She wants him to show the proof, so he tries to show their conversations via phone, but fails every time for reasons out of his control, resulting in her seeing things in Gleb's favour. Ultimately, he sees the perfect chance when Gleb seemingly gets drunk, but while he runs for Anastasia, Gleb reveals to Varya (who rushed to treat him) that it's how things actually happened: Varya got wasted, and Gleb had to babysit her. The two gets punished by Bykov, angry at his failures, but decides to do another date right here, in the hospital.

Semyon, enraged by Levin, who, in his sleep, ruined a lipstick he bought for Olga, uses that lipstick on Levin himself. Bykov, intrigued by how it would end, lets him to go to work like this. Unfortunately, Levin's patient is violently homophobic and, after driving Levin outside of his ward, comes to Kisegach in attempt to get Levin fired (unsuccessfully). Just in time to botch Bykov's attempt to frame Gleb. Later, Levin decides to strike back at Semyon, and uses that same lipstick to mark Semyon's white coat (knowing that Olga is here to take it). Lobanov doesn't take it well and forces Levin to go and tell her the truth... as well as puts what's left of lipstick on his face, for daring to order him.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Above the Influence: Gleb did not, in fact, take advantage of drunk Varya, and actually helped her to get better.
  • Ask a Stupid Question...: When Lobanov tries to learn from Gleb what he did with Varya the previous night, hoping to hear the intimate details, Gleb, in turn, asks him which positions he prefers when he sleeps with Olga, clearly hinting that it's not his business. Lobanov gets offended at first, but later, when Lyuba tries to learn about Varya from him, asks her the same question regarding Levin.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Lobanov is already very angry at Levin for causing him problems with his wife. When Levin takes out a lipstick and orders him to put it on his lips and got to the skinhead patient, Semyon just rubs it on his face, to aforementioned skinhead's approval.
  • Chekhov's Gun: That restaurant Gleb tried to rent at the beginning of the episode? He later gives it up to Bykov, who later invites Kisegach there, to apologise for irritating her for a whole day.
  • Doesn't Trust Those Guys: Levin's patient's "justification" for insisting on firing Levin (whom he assumes to be gay is that since he's apparently "gay", he may be related to the people who injured him (as they're likely his lovers!), and thus shouldn't be let near "normal" people. Kisegach, angry at him trying to order her around, kicks him out of her office.
  • Exact Eavesdropping: Bykov tries to use his phone, so Kisegach can hear how Gleb acts as a Spoiled Brat and Jerkass, while Bykov acts nicely and reasonably, so she would have a reason to fire him. But something always interrupts her, forcing her to hear only the parts where Gleb acts nicely, while angry Bykov yells at him.
  • Inspector Javert: Kisegach believes that Bykov is unfair to Gleb, accusing him of being rude and incompetent, while Gleb is a good boy. Unknowing to her, Gleb actually tries to make the situation look that way, to strike back at Bykov for their prior conflict.
  • Jerkass: Levin's patient (highly implied to be a skinhead) is violently homophobic (even the reason why he's here is because of the bar brawl with some people he assumed to be gays, and attacked). He scares Levin out of the ward, and then tries to get him fired for being "gay". Fortunately, Kisegach sides with Levin.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Gleb for once shows that he cares about someone besides himself, when he firstly reveals that he refused to take advantage of drunk Varya, and then submits to Bykov to prevent Bykov from punishing Varya in his stead.
  • Lysistrata Gambit: When Levin initially refuses to Lyuba's request and ask Gleb whether he had sex last night (they need to find out whether he did sleep with Varya, or not), Lyuba threatens to no longer sleep with Levin. Levin agrees, only muttering that "she hooked him on sex herself, and now blackmails".
  • Mistaken for Cheating: Levin retaliates on Lobanov for his lipstick prank by using that same lipstick on Lobanov's white coat. This leads to Olga thinking that Semyon is cheating on her. Unfortunately for Levin, Lobanov just proceeds to abuse Levin even more to retaliate for that.
  • Mistaken for Gay: Lobanov uses a lipstick on Levin (as a punishment for ruining his gift to Olya), after which Levin goes to treat a violently homophobic patient, who obviously takes the lipstick for a sign of his "gayness" (Levin's weird choice of words when ordering him to remove his pants makes it only worse).
  • Not What It Looks Like: Levin puts lipstick on his lips, and starts kissing Semyon's coat (knowing that it would cause Lobanov issues with Olga), as a little vengeance. That's when Bykov comes in, and sees this weird act. When explained, he approves and lets him continue.
  • Relationship Upgrade: This episode marks the beginning of Gleb's and Varya's relationship.
  • Revealing Cover-Up: Attempt to send Levin to "subtly" interrogate Gleb only makes Gleb realise that he tries to learn what Lyuba previously failed: whether he had sex with Varya; and if they need that info that badly, it's likely that it's Varya who wants it.
  • Taking the Heat: When Bykov gets very angry at Gleb for keeping evading justice for slipping away from his night shift, Varya takes the blame, saying that it's her fault, as Gleb did this because of her. Bykov readily gives her whopping seven night shifts (one her, and six in Gleb's stead): if he can't punish Gleb, would take the next best thing. Gleb then sacrifices the restaurant rent he'd prepared, in Bykov's favour, accepts his night shift and apologises for prior behaviour, all to free Varya.
  • Too Much Information: Levin, to have excuse to ask whether Gleb had sex last night, tells him that he always drinks coffee after having sex (it helps to restore energy). Gleb asks him why the heck he's sharing that info with him, but Levin then "explains" that he assumed that Gleb is doing the same because he recently had sex, too.
