Recap / The Interns S 10 E 21

Go To

Bykov tries to understand just how Kisegach learned about his old apartment (it's the only possible reason for her kicking him out), and finds her wedding ring — which means that she was there. Bykov realises that it's Kupitman's fault: he was in the shower just when she arrived. Bykov and Kupitman tries to tell Kisegach their story as is, but she refuses to believe: had it really was Kupitman, there would be no reason to hide him. Bykov then suggest to bring Kupitman's lover as a witness, but Kupitman refuses; when pressed, he reveals that woman is married. The lover refuses to put her own marriage at risk, even to protect Bykov — and dumps Kupitman for not keeping secret. Kupitman comes with another plan, and asks one of the nurses to pose as his lover — but Kisegach suspects a foul play, and insists on using a polygraph. Kupitman still refuses to give up, and says that he has two hours to make the lie into the truth. When the polygraph arrives, Kisegach interrogates, in order, Bykov, Kupitman and the nurse; first two tricks the polygraph, but nurse fails. Kisegach wants nothing to do with Bykov, ever again, and Bykov is ready to give up. But Kupitman tries the last option. He asks to use the lie detector again, and admits that he planned to have sex yesterday, but erection didn't happen; he was afraid of bieng mocked by Bykov if it comes out. She believes and apologises before Bykov, who's about to get wasted out of depression. He then explains why he needs old apartment, and suggest to sell it, but she instead suggests to keep it as "safe haven"... and next turn to use it is hers.

In Bykov's absence, Max and Lyosha gets assigned to work under Phil. Phil outright admits to Rita: he dislikes Maxim, considering him to be sleazy. But Phil is not Bykov, so he would not let his antipathy to affect his work, and he would not treat Max any different than Lyosha. Maxim overhears the full conversation, and tricks Phil into giving much harsher tasks to Alexei to "prove" that he treats Max no worse than Lyosha. He gets progressively more audacious, until it culminates in Alexei doing all the work. Alexei snaps, and tells Phil that he clearly treats Max better than him. Phil insists that he just wanted to not abuse Max, but get told that he abuses Lyosha instead. Phil promises to switch their roles. Maxim then complains about being overworked, and when pointed that he made Phil overwork Alexei, says it's Phil's fault as a boss that he fell for it. Phil then just makes the work by himself. And then Alexei complains that he's working with papers, while Maxim is slacking off; Phil suddenly agrees to take even that on himself. Maxim is celebrating his victory, but Rita overhears his discussion with Alexei (who's not very happy with this scheme), and tells everything to Phil, who angrily promises them that they would spend a hellish week working under him, examining every single penis in Venereology, very clearly copying Bykov's mannerism. Maxim makes an ill-thought comment, which gets them both two extra night shifts.

In Bykov's absence, Sophia must once again work under Gleb. She proceeds with her patient, only to find out that he has a raging boner, for no apparent reason. But Lyuba suggested to just try again later, so it would vanish by itself. It doesn't, and now she doesn't know what to do. Sophia asks Gleb for help, because she starts suspecting that her patient's erection is his reaction to her; he wouldn't react this way to Gleb, right? Wrong. Fortunately, it turns out that it was not an erection at all, but rather socks, which the patient, out of boredom, put in his pants as a silly joke. Infuriated, Sophia decides to bust the patient on his lie, and pretends to flirt with him, and then suddenly grabs his "boner"... only to learn that this time, it's genuine (as reaction to her flirting), and it's very painful for the guy. Sophia yells at him and rushes out, now thinking that Gleb pranked her.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Bait-and-Switch: When it seems that Sophia's patient tries to put his dick out of his pants... turns out that he had his socks in here, to look like he has an enormous erection. Why? Just for silly joke; it's boring there, and he thought it would be fun.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: When Phil learns that Maxim not just tricked him into doing all the work, but also planned it right from the start, and later bragged about it, he yells a long tirade of insults on Max and Lyosha (sounding very Bykov-like in process). When Max again tries his "do you really hate me?" scheme, Phil tells him to go screw himself, after which punishes both Maxim and Alexei with night shifts — they both screwed up, and both would be punished, identically.
  • Clear My Name: Bykov's plot is entirely built around him trying to show that he didn't cheat on Kisegach.
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: As pointed by Kisegach in the end, had Bykov bothered to tell her about this apartment, the whole mess with Bykov being accused of cheating could have been averted.
  • Digging Yourself Deeper: Already mad Phil tells Maxim and Alexei that they would spend next week working under him, on most disgusting tasks possible, and examine "every penis in Venereology". Max tries to use his "do you really hate me that much?" scheme once again, which enrages Phil even more, and results in both interns receiving additional night shifts.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: Kisegach comes to apologise just before Bykov can start drinking himself into blissful oblivion with vodka.
  • Lie Detector: Kisegach uses a polygraph to test whether Bykov actually cheated on her or not. Bykov provides such a mess of an answer that the polygraph fails to analyse it. After couple of tries, she just decides to test Kupitman instead. Then they tests Kupitman's "lover", who fails: they do bother to ask her when she had sex with Kupitman, so Kupitman's plan to just have sex while waiting for the polygraph's arrival fails. However, later Kupitman convinces Kisegach that they told the truth by pretending that he tried to hide the embarrassment he had previous night, in which Kisegach believes because no one would joke with it, especially Kupitman.
  • The Loins Sleep Tonight: In order to convince Kisegach that it wasn't Bykov in the apartment with a lover, Kupitman lies to her that he had a problem with erection, and was too embarrassed to say it right away, as Bykov, being Bykov, would mock him for that. She thinks that such explanation is plausible exactly because Kupitman wouldn't lie about such topic (and polygraph confirms this — Kupitman knows how to fool these).
  • Manipulative Bastard: Maxim tricks Phil into giving Alexei much harsher conditions just to "prove" that Phil doesn't treat Max "worse" than Lyosha. Than he tricks him to reassign one of the tasks to nurses, meaning that Max is completely free from work.
  • Never My Fault:
    • Maxim tricks Phil into overworking Alexei while leaving Max work-free. When Phil realises this, he forces Max to do the rest of the work while giving Lyosha only very simple task. What Maxim does? Accuses Phil of being unable to fairly assign tasks. While Max has a point in that it was Phil's mistake as a boss, he completely omits the part that Phil did this because Maxim tricked him in the first place. This was his last ditch attempt to avoid responsibility for his plan's failure... which works (at least for a time), resulting in Phil himself doing Max's work for him.
    • When Sophia tries to call her patient out on his fake erection prank (he previously made fun on her by putting socks in his pants), she flirts with him before suddenly grabbing his groin (in very painful manner). When turns out that this time, erection is real (caused by her behaviour), she yells at him, calls him a pervert, and rushes out.
  • Raging Stiffie: Sophia's patient has a very noticeable boner, for no apparent reason, each time Sophia tries to visit him. Because of this, Sophia can't concentrate on work, forcing her to ask Gleb for help, in hope that he wouldn't react this way on him; he does. Fortunately, turns out that it was not an actual erection, but rather socks he put in his pants. Why? Just for silly joke, out of boredom.
  • Shower of Love: The reason why Kupitman missed Kisegach (and thus, an opportunity to warn her): he was in the shower with his new lover, when Kisegach arrived.
  • Slimeball: Phil dislikes Maxim, considering him to be sleazy and untrustworthy. Unfortunately, Max overhears this and comes up with a plan.
  • So Crazy, It Must Be True: While Kisegach knows that Kupitman is an experienced poker player, she considers him having problems with erection to be too embarrassing to just make up, so if he admitted them, it must be for really serious reason. The truth is, he did lie about it (and due to being experienced poker player, effortlessly cheated the polygraph).
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Alexei confronts Phil about being overworked, while Maxim is actually free. When Phil tries to explain that he does it to show that he treats Maxim no worse than Alexei, Alexei points that Phil now treats Maxim better than him.
