Recap / The Goldbergs S 8 E 19 Daddy Daughter Day 2

Go To

A Plot: Following Erica and Geoff's breakup, Murray decides to take Erica out to cheer her up.

B Plot: Adam is excited to participate in the school senior prank until his conscience catches up with him, and he looks to Beverly to help get him out of it.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Johnny Atkins to Beverly, first asking Erica about her during the episode, and then outright hitting on Beverly during The Tag (before Carla interrupts and calls Beverly a man-stealer).
  • Actor Allusion: Mr. Perott tells Adam that being a nerd isn't that special. Perott is played by Anthony Michael Hall, best known for playing nerds in the '80s.
  • Batman Gambit: Adam's friends tell him that their prank is going to be to deface a statue of William Penn, counting on him blabbing to Beverly and her informing Principal Ball so that they're all distracted while they let donkeys loose inside the building.
  • Be Yourself: After Adam wrecks Mr. Perott's motorcycle, while the teacher is upset at having to take public transportation, he's not upset at Adam due to knowing how he just wanted to leave a good impression on everyone before graduation. But he also states that the impression Adam's made every other day, of a good-hearted and honest man, is the best legacy that he could leave.
  • Cold Turkeys Are Everywhere: Murray takes Erica on a Daddy-Daughter Day to take her mind off her breakoff with Geoff. Unfortunately, her old friend Carla and Johnny Atkins are working at the rink, and announce to the entire building that Geoff's now on the market after hearing about it from them. Later, Murray decides to end the night with a dinner reserved by Geoff for their fifth anniversary, which they had planned to give to Barry; said dinner turns out to have been planned as a romantic evening, with specially prepared dishes meant specifically for the two of them, ending with a cake with Geoff and Erica's faces on it.
  • Comically Missing the Point: While at the roller skating rink, Johnny Atkins (who's working there as the DJ) asks Erica if her mom ever talks about him. When she says he's sometimes used as an example of how horrible their lives would turn out if they didn't pay attention to their education, Johnny's thrilled to be remembered.
  • Cutting the Knot: After many repeated attempts and spent quarters, Murray eventually gets the stuffed unicorn from the rink's claw machine...by bribing Johnny Atkins into opening the machine's hatch.
  • Even the Guys Want Him: When Carla and Johnny (who are both working at the roller skating rink) learn that Geoff's single, Johnny urges Carla to go after "that catch", saying that he will if she doesn't.
  • Failed Dramatic Exit: When Adam lies to his mother about putting up her banner, Beverly pretends to drop her keys so Adam can pick them up, leading to narrator-Adam stating his success...only to be interrupted by Beverly coming back because she needed another key on the same ring. Twice.
  • Poke the Poodle: Adam's initial ideas for pranks include things like handing out completely safe hot dogs to students and leaving Principal Ball an anonymous thank-you note. Bev's suggestion of putting up a banner declaring how much Adam loves her isn't any better.
  • Prank Gone Too Far: After feeling used by his friends, combined with feeling shame over his "goody two-shoes" reputation, Adam decides to actually deface the William Penn statue...which ends up not only toppling over, but also wrecking Mr. Perott's motorcycle in the process.
  • Relationship Revolving Door: Johnny Atkins and Carla Mann are implied to have gotten back together (and Carla, on her hand, to have ended with Dave Kim).
  • Sequel Episode: To the original Daddy-Daughter Day, with Murray attempting to make Erica feel better by taking her back to the same roller skating rink, and lending a sympathetic ear to her "real" adult problems instead of mere teenage drama.
  • Work Off the Debt: At the end of the B-Plot, after being responsible for breaking it, Adam is shown helping Mr. Perott repair his motorcycle.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: After an alright day at the roller skating rink but a horrible dinner, Murray tells Erica she's a strong individual, and that she's fully capable of dealing with her current relationship issues without his help.
