Recap / The Goldbergs S 2 E 8 I Rode A Hoverboard

Go To

A Plot: Adam breaks his arm in an embarrassing way, and exaggerates at school that he fell off of a hoverboard just like in Back to the Future Part II. The lie threatens his friendship with Emmy Mirsky after she defends his story.

B Plot: The family falls in love with a new Chinese restaurant in town owned by Dave Kim's parents, and Beverly fears she's being replaced in the kitchen. When Beverly gets the boys and Erica banned from the restaurant, it begins a war between Beverly and Dave Kim's mom.

  • Anachronism Stew: The episode largely revolves around the eponymous hoverboard from Back to the Future Part II. However, that movie came out on November 22, 1989, meaning that hoverboards were in the public awareness for only the last 40 days of the decade.
  • Cut Himself Shaving: Or in Adam's case, broke his arm dancing to George Michael on camera.
  • Humble Pie: Partly because the lie was impossible to prove, but mostly to apologize to Emmy, Adam ends up showing his class a video of how he actually broke his arm. Emmy still doesn't forgive him, but at the same time, their friendship isn't completely ruined.
  • Rejected Apology: After trusting Adam, getting in trouble for defending him, and then learning that Adam lied to her about his injury, Emmy is furious with Adam. Even when he shows a video of the truth to the class, Emmy clearly states that it doesn't make up for betraying her trust. However, this turns out to not be enough to destroy their friendship.
  • Snowball Lie: Adam's lie about being on a hoverboard is doubted by his science teacher, leading to an attempt to record himself riding on one (which involves very obvious rope).
  • Unfulfilled Purpose Misery: Beverly's motivation in the B Plot. In the end, after the rest of the family tell her that they value her for more than just her "mom" skills, she relents and makes eating at the restaurant a weekly event.
