- Bait-and-Switch: After being built up as a dangerous rival to Grandmaster Flash, complete with violent and aggressive proteges and a menacing introduction, DJ Kool Herc turns out to be a perfectly amiable guy who discourages unnecessary violence and whose parties are catered and co-DJ'd by his parents.
- Duels Decide Everything: DJ Kool Herc tells the Notorious Three and the Get Down Brothers to settle their rivalry with a DJ battle instead of physical violence.
- "Eureka!" Moment: While watching Ramon and Francisco fight, Jackie finds the inspiration for Mylene's song in the blend between the street and the church.
- Reasonable Authority Figure: While Herc naturally suspects the Get Down Brothers of being the bootleggers, he's willing to hear them out and let them prove their innocence.
- "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Cisco delivers a massive one to Ramon, revealing that Ramon was once an irresponsible partier who had children with two different women back in Puerto Rico, abandoned all of them to go to the US, then hit and nearly killed a father and son with his car while blackout high on cocaine and found religion while serving his prison sentence.
- Reveal Shot: DJ Kool Herc looms menacingly over Boo-Boo, asking him a strange, non-sequitur question about mustard and onions in a threatening voice. Then the lights come up and reveal that Herc's parents are serving hot dogs.
