Recap / The Dick Van Dyke Show S 2 E 22 Dont Trip Over That Mountain

Go To

Laura feels worried to death when Rob decides to go off on a skiing weekend with Jerry. Despite her husband's reassurances, she heavily suspects his klutziness and competitiveness will create disaster. Rob tries to prove her wrong...and ends up with full-body injuries. Can he hide the trouble from Laura?

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Blatant Lies: After Laura sees his bandaged upper body, Rob tries to claim that it's standard skiing equipment designed to keep the cold out. Laura doesn't believe it for a second.
  • Digging Yourself Deeper: When Laura says emphatically that Jerry called to say Rob fell off a mountain, Millie says that couldn't be. Laura asks why, and Millie says they couldn't have found him yet.
  • Dreaming of Things to Come: Laura's fear about the trip is all the more pronounced because she had a nightmare about Rob breaking both his legs, a wrist, and more things than she could bear to look at.
  • Exiled to the Couch: After Rob picks a fight on returning home, Laura throws his pajamas and a blanket at him. She almost throws a pillow as well, but she sees Rob's bandages just in time.
  • Reverse Psychology: While worrying, Laura hypothesizes that Rob might do something dangerous and break a leg simply because she told him not to. Millie tells her she's being silly.
  • Smack on the Back: Because of Rob's full-body "sprain", being touched almost anywhere, no matter how lightly, is painful for him. He tells people not to touch him multiple times during the episode.
  • Technically a Smile: Laura denies that she's insincere about telling Rob to have a wonderful time skiing, saying that she's smiling. Rob begs to differ.
Rob: Honey, your teeth are showing, but your lips are tense.
  • Tempting Fate: Rob dismisses Laura's concerns, saying that he and Jerry both think things will go well. While taking his ski poles to the car, he trips over a step and bangs the poles on the doorway.
