You don't have to be apples to be "rotten".
Elder Kettle throws out his back taking care of his prized vegetables and Cuphead and Mugman reluctantly volunteer to help. They later accept some "help" from the rambling Root Pack, only to find out they have taken over the garden.

Tropes:

  • Big "NO!": The brothers give one when the Root Pack drains Kettle's garden dry.
  • Call-Back: Mugman freezes up when having to speak in front of an audience, just like in Roll the Dice with the audience of King Dice's show.
  • Chased Off into the Sunset: The Root Pack as Elder Kettle tries to make stew out of them.
  • *Crack!* "Oh, My Back!": Elder Kettle throws out his back at the end of his song and spends most of the cartoon laid up in bed.
  • Crying a River: As the other vegetables cry due to Ollie, their tears flood the garden, reviving it.
  • Everybody Cries: Due to Ollie's tears and onion stench, all the partygoers start crying, including the guard. By the time they're all washed away, even Cuphead and Mugman cry in Tears of Joy now that the vegetable garden is once again in bloom.
  • Exact Words: Cuphead and Mugman try to turn Sal's words against him, since he told them that the party won't stop until sunrise. They fail.
Mugman: (weakly, dressed as a rooster) Cock-a-doodle-doo?
  • Foreshadowing: Elder Kettle makes a big deal in his song about his "babies" getting big. Most people who farm vegetables continue to grow them until they're big enough to cook with, which is what he attempts to do to the Root Pack.
  • G-Rated Drug: Water is this to vegetables, as it acts like alcohol for them, essentially looking like they're Drunk on Milk.
  • Musical Nod: "Botanic Panic", the song from the original Cuphead video game, is played by an orchestra at a garden party at the Elder Kettle's house, with Chauncey himself as the conductor.
  • Onion Tears: Ollie getting sad causes him to peel and make others around him cry. Cuphead and Mugman use this to their advantage.
  • Orphaned Punchline: Before Cuphead and Mugman confront Sal about hosting his party, we see him with a circle of other guests saying "And I just say, 'What money?'" Everyone cracks up laughing.
  • Police Are Useless: Cuphead calls the cops to get rid of the vegetables, only for them to drive off when an eggplant bouncer tells them they're not on the list.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: Happens to both sides with Cuphead & Mugman successfully driving the Root Pack's party away, but the trio get the last laugh by sucking up all the water in the garden and drying up all the vegetables in retaliation, including Elder Kettle's "babies". Then Elder Kettle arrives and mistakes the Root Pack for his "babies"... and gets set to cook them into a vegetable stew.
  • Secret Message Wink:
    • When Sal gets the idea to send the boys off and have a party in their yard, he reassures them that Elder Kettle's garden is in good hands while simultaneously elbowing and winking at Ollie.
    • Cuphead notices that dramatically lamenting Elder Kettle's garden makes Ollie cry, which can re-water the garden. He winks to Mugman to tell him to follow his lead.
  • Tempting Fate: After Elder Kettle arrives and mistakes the Root Pack for his "babies", Ollie says that's a happy end to them. Immediately after that, Elder Kettle gets set to cook them into a vegetable stew.

Who would have thought that having a good cry can save Elder Kettle's plants?
