Recap / The Boondocks - S3 E5: "Stinkmeaner 3: The Hateocracy"

Go To

"Stinkmeaner 3: The Hateocracy" is the 5th episode of the 3rd season of The Boondocks, and the 35th episode overall. It originally aired on May 30, 2010.

Colonel H. Stinkmeaner's old crew of fellow cranky senior citizens, "The Hateocracy", arrive in Woodcrest in order to exact payback on the Freeman family over Stinkmeaner's death. The Freemans find themselves outmatched by Stinkmeaner's crew, so they hire Bushido Brown to protect them. Unfortunately, they discover what an arrogant bastard he is.

Tropes:

  • Applied Mathematics: Stinkmeaner states at the beginning that "Nigga Moment + Nigga Synthesis = Complete Disaster". He later brings this equation up again after the Hateocracy kills Bushido Brown at the end of their fight, just to emphasize this point.
  • Avenging the Villain: Subverted. While Stinkmeaner was an old "friend" of the Hateocracy, they don't personally care about him (nor each other). They're just using the thin excuse of "revenge" to try and murder the Freemans for the fun of it, and probably would have gone after some other random person anyway.
  • Badass Crew: The Hateocracy prove to be this. All three of them managed to put down the Freeman family with little effort, and were able to handle Bushido Brown on more-or-less equal footing (keep in mind that Bushido is a trained martial artist, and much younger than them to boot).
  • Black-and-Gray Morality: The Hateocracy is the Black since they like to terrorize people for fun while Bushido Brown is the Gray as he will only protect the Freeman family for money.
  • Characterization Marches On: When first introduced, Bushido Brown is a dutiful, serious bodyguard to Oprah. Here he's an overpaid diva who has no problem extorting his clients. Though, from what we seen in his fight with the Hateocracy, he's perfectly capable of being all-business as long as he's paid.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: The Hateocracy get this as an Establishing Character Moment.
    • When they first appear, they argue with Uncle Ruckus and threaten him, challenging the fat old geezer to a fight. Ruckus gets beaten to a pulp and hospitalized.
    • The Hateocracy later attack the Freemans (Crabmiser vs. Robert, Pistofferson and Gripenasty vs. Huey and Riley respectively). Robert just barely escapes with his life, while Huey and Riley receive one-sided beatings (only living because their enemies had to flee the schoolyard when the bell rang).
  • Dirty Coward: In the Dream Intro, Robert willingly leaves everyone he knows for dead at the hands of the Stinkmeaner clones.
    • He forces Tom to let go of Sarah while the Stinkmeaners drag her away, callously remarking "You'll find another white woman!".
    • He throws Jazmine and kicks Tom downstairs in order to slow down the Stinkmeaners.
    • He leaves behind his own grandkids Huey and Riley, while the Stinkmeaners grab them and they're calling for help.
    • He hijacks Ruckus' motorboat and knocks Ruckus overboard to his demise (the boat could've easily accommodated them both). Although Ruckus was also planning to leave Robert to die.
    • He does all of this without a second thought, forsaking everyone in his life just to save his own ass. To top it all off, he's not horrified when he wakes up from the dream, and instead is proud that he was wily enough to make his escape.
  • Dream Intro: The episode begins with Robert having a nightmare that parodies the opening scene of 28 Weeks Later. While the DuBoises are over at the Freemans' house for lunch, a large horde of Stinkmeaner clones suddenly attack them from nowhere. While fleeing from them, Robert willingly sacrifices all of his friends and family just to save his own ass.
  • Entitled Bastard: Bushido Brown proves to be one hell of an entitled rich prick. He's only willing to protect the Freeman family as their bodyguard by charging ridiculously high fees for Robert to pay. But that's not all; he forces Robert to purchase all kinds of luxury items for Bushido's personal use (with Robert's own money). Robert understandably wanted to fire Bushido (until the Hateocracy returns at the last minute). At which point, Bushido doubles his fees for rehire much to Robert's frustration and annoyance.
  • Evil Old Folks: All three (formerly four) members of the Hateocracy. Colonel Stinkmeaner met three other mean old bastards (Rufus Crabmiser, George Pistofferson, and Esmeralda Gripenasty), and they all take pleasure in harassing other people for fun. Years later, after Stinkmeaner's death, the surviving three reunite just to murder an old man and his two little boys.
  • For the Evulz: Near the end of the episode, the Hateocracy reveals that they aren't trying to avenge Stinkmeaner, they just wanna kill the Freemans for fun.
  • Foreshadowing: Despite the Hateocracy initially seeming like they're going after the Freemans due to Stinkmeaner's death, Stinkmeaner's describes himself and the other members of the Hateocracy hating each other, but hating everyone else even more. This somewhat hints they aren't really interested in actually getting revenge for Stinkmeaner.
  • Interactive Narrator: Huey tries to narrate like usual, only for Stinkmeaner (as a spirit in Hell) cutting him off to tell the rest of the story.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Bushido may charge Robert extravagantly for protection from the Hateocracy, but because it's his family's life on the line, Robert doesn't have much room, if at all, to negotiate.
  • Off with His Head!: Bushido Brown's final fate; he gets his head removed by Crabmiser's flying crab trap.
  • Out of Focus: Played with. While Stinkmeaner doesn't appear to fight the Freemans like last time (with his only appearances being a dream sequence and a flashback), he does act as a narrator for this episode.
  • Police Are Useless: Surprisingly subverted, given how otherwise incompetent the Woodcrest Police Department are in other episodes. Apparently, one of the Freemans' neighbors had the common sense to call 911 during Bushido Brown's fight with the Hateocracy. After Bushido is slain, the police arrive just in time to arrest the Hateocracy before they could do the same to the Freemans (though oddly not responding earlier to the elders' assault and trespassing). Riley was grateful, but then backtracked due to being "Anti-snitch".
Riley: Ooh-hoo, the police. Thank God for the pol— I mean, uh Who snitched?! Who called the Po-Po?
  • Rejected Apology: After the Hateocracy kills Bushido Brown, Robert desperately apologizes to the Hateocracy near the end of the episode for killing Stinkmeaner. The group rejects it, though not out of loyalty to Stinkmeaner. They don't even care that he killed Stinkmeaner. They just wanted to ruin someone's life and Robert gave them an excuse to come after him and his family.
  • Sequel Episode: Part 3 of the Colonel Stinkmeaner episodes. This time it introduces a new part of a "Nigga Moment" called "Nigga Synthesis" (where black people make bonds with each other based on their own ignorance and hatred of others). If the two parts ever meet for any reason, you can guarantee a complete f*ckin' disaster. Bushido Brown became a victim of this at the hands of the Hateocracy.
    • It also introduces another solution to quelling a "Nigga Moment": Jail. Specifically, contacting the authorities to end a dangerous conflict rather than handling it yourself.
  • Shout-Out: The Dream Intro is a parody of the opening scene of 28 Weeks Later. The army of imaginary Stinkmeaner clones also recalls the legion of Smiths in The Matrix Reloaded. The Hateocracy themselves are expies of Florence Johnston, Fred Sanford, and J.J. Evans.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Just as the Hateocracy have killed Bushido Brown and are preparing to attack the Freemans again...the police show up and arrest them all, having been called by a neighbor. Turns out you can't just beat up kids at their school or kill a man in public and not face the consequences.
  • Tall Poppy Syndrome: Lord Rufus Crabmiser gives a speech to Robert of the Crabs in the Bucket analogy. It's unsure if he actually believes this philosophy since, like the other members of the Hatocracy, he enjoys killing and fucking over other people for the sake of it:
Lord Rufus Crabmiser: Fascinating creature the crab, got that hard exterior; but he ain't really dangerous, 'cept to another crab. Dumb as all hell; can't even walk straight. Matter of fact the only thing a crab is good for is holding back other crabs. A crab don’t wanna see another crab make it. […] Crab is like: "If I'm gonna die, we all gonna die." I admire that; we all gotta die sometimes, might as well help each other get there. After all, that's what you did to Stinkmeaner… Id'nt that right, Robert FREEMAN!?
  • Toxic Friend Influence: Stinkmeaner discusses how friendships can be born from stupid and awful goals, calling the process "nigga synthesis" and when conflict occurs, this type of friendship can lead to disaster. Surely enough, the Hateocracy, a bunch of old people who come together to bring about suffering, try and go after Robert and Bushido Brown is killed in the resulting fight.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Robert orders the dead body of his bodyguard Bushido Brown "Headless Dickhead" to be off his lawn after the police arrive to arrest the Hateocracy for the murder of the latter, though it's justified since Bushido was making Robert pay a lot of his money for his other needs while he was being his bodyguard.
  • Villainous Friendship: Deconstructed. None of the Hatocracy can stand each other, they're united only in their hatred of everyone else and the fact that they can do more damage as a group. This is the point of "Nigga Synthesis": the only thing they have in common is the same destructive purpose.
  • Villainous Rescue: Ruckus inadvertently does this for Robert in the "28 Weeks Later" nightmare by coincidentally having set out on a boat to go fishing. When Robert tries to get on his boat, Ruckus starts kicking him in the face trying to make him get eaten by the Stinkmeaners which gets, not Robert, but him left behind to be eaten by the Stinkmeaners.
  • Would Hurt a Child: The Hateocracy is not afraid to hurt the Freeman boys.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Brown pulls no punches laying the smackdown on Esmeralda, and she takes the heaviest beating out of the Hateocracy members.

The Hateocracy

The members of the Hateocracy hated each other. But they hated everyone else even more and thus teamed up to terrorize the retirement home they were in.

How well does it match the trope?
