Go To

"The Spoiler Alert Segmentation" is an episode of The Big Bang Theory that first aired on February 7, 2013. Directed by Mark Cendrowski. Teleplay by Steven Molaro, Maria Ferrari and Adam Faberman, based on a story by Chuck Lorre, Eric Kaplan and Steve Holland.

Penny and Sheldon find their relationships with Leonard and Amy accelerating too fast. Meanwhile, Raj looks after Howard's mother while he and Bernadette are out of town, but begins getting crept out by her mothering him.

Tropes

  • Book Ends: At the beginning, Sheldon spoils Harry Potter for Leonard. At the end, it's The Walking Dead (2010).
  • Change the Uncomfortable Subject: Sheldon takes any opportunity he can to get Amy and Penny to focus their anger on someone else so he doesn't have to deal with explaining how he doesn't want Amy moving in with him. This backfires when Penny reveals the truth to Amy in response.
Leonard: Since when don’t you want to live with me?
Penny: Oh, don’t get all huffy. You’re the one who decided to move in without even asking me if I was ready.
Sheldon: Yeah, I think we should talk about that.
Penny: (glaring at Sheldon) And since you love the truth so much, why don’t you tell Amy you don’t want to live with her instead of blaming it on me?
Sheldon: ...I thought we were talking about the other thing.
  • Cowardice Callout: When Amy discovers Sheldon doesn't want her living with him but he'd rather throw Penny under the bus than admit any wrongdoing, she calls him a coward to his face. Sheldon's response?
"Well...! The evidence does support that."
  • Dude, Where's My Reward?: Amy goes ballistic when Sheldon says she can't live with him, saying that they have been going out for two years and she has been nothing but patient with him and everything she has had to put up with from him, as well as saying she is the best girlfriend he's ever going to have.
  • Graceful Loser: Or at least as graceful a loser as you can get with Sheldon, who fully agrees with Amy calling him out as a coward for throwing Penny under the bus in an attempt to redirect Amy's rage off of him.
  • Here We Go Again!: After angrily confronting their boyfriends, Penny suggest Amy to badmouth them, and Amy suggests she should live with Penny to show them both, leaving Penny in the same uncomfortable sitaution as the beginning.
  • Hypocrite:
    • Sheldon has no issue spoiling something for someone else, and when Leonard calls him out on it he believes Leonard is once again whining over nothing, even though Leonard points out that if something like that happened to Sheldon he would "bitch about it for weeks".
    • Penny filibusters in telling Leonard that she's not ready for him to move in with her. But then she calls out Sheldon for not doing the same thing with Amy (though this was probably more about her being angry at Sheldon setting Amy up to let the cat out of the bag to Leonard to protect his own hide).
  • Insistent Terminology: When Sheldon is packing all of Leonard's collectibles and Amy is writing them down, Amy refuses to list their actual names and simply calls them each a "children's toy".
  • Kick the Dog: As a final act of spite in the Cold Open, Sheldon drops a second spoiler for Harry Potter (the death of Dobby in the final book) for no real reason other than to get in one last shot at Leonard.
  • List of Transgressions: After Sheldon tells Amy she can't live with him, she lists several things she has had to put up with while going out with him for the last two years, while demanding to know why she can't live with him.
Amy: I watch your dopey space movies, I signed your ridiculous contract, I even stopped wearing lip gloss ’cause you said it made my mouth look too slippery.
  • My Beloved Smother: Mrs. Wolowitz extends this treatment to Raj.
Mrs. Wolowitz: I drew you a bath!
Raj: [on the phone with Howard] Oh, my God! She's not going to bathe me, is she?
Howard: Gee, I wish I could tell you no.
  • Never My Fault: Sheldon blames everyone but himself for his troubles in this episode (as usual). After spoiling a Harry Potter book for Leonard, even though the same thing would upset himself, he dismisses Leonard's anger as more nagging and claims Leonard is the annoying one among them. He is shocked when Leonard decides to move out and when he wants him back so Amy won't move in he claims that he forgives Leonard for his outburst instead of apologizing. He later blames Penny for giving Leonard somewhere to go and Amy an excuse to move in with him, calling her a "homewrecker" and begging her to kick Leonard out when she says she doesn't want to live with him yet. When Sheldon tries to tell Amy she can't live with him he chickens out when she starts screaming and once again blames Penny, only for Penny to point out the real reason to Amy is simply because he doesn't want to live with her. He may have at least realized some of it was his fault by the end, when he accidentally spoils an episode of The Walking Dead (2010) for Leonard and attempts to cover it up.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Sheldon spoiling the big reveal on Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (the death of Dumbledore) is what sets Leonard off; it was the Last Straw after years of putting up with his selfish behavior.
  • Shout-Out: Penny compares Leonard and Sheldon to Bert and Ernie. "You guys even teach me about numbers and stuff."
  • Spoiling Shout-Out:
  • Suddenly Shouting: Amy does this when Sheldon tells her she can't live with him, even though she has done everything perfectly so far.
Amy: I did everything just the way you like it.
    Sheldon: You did.
Amy: THEN WHAT THE HELL, SHELDON!? We have been going out for over two years, and I have been nothing but patient with you.
  • The Thing That Would Not Leave: Penny and Sheldon want Leonard and Amy respectively out of their rooms and go back to the old ways when it was Leonard and Sheldon together. At the end, Amy becomes this trope to Penny.
