Recap / The Batman S 1 E 6 The Cat And The Bat

Go To

Batman fails to capture Catwoman, the elusive cat burglar, and she swipes his utility belt. While Batman finds a way to find her and get his belt back she begins planning to put the belt to good use and rob a certain statue that has caught her eye.

Tropes for this episode include:

  • Batman Gambit: One that's used on Batman. Catwoman triggers a silent alarm just so Batman will show up and the two can finally meet.
  • Bait-and-Switch: After Catwoman defeats Batman she leans down to him and says she'll take something to remember him by, with her hand blacking out the screen. When Batman quickly regains consciousness his vision is briefly blurry as Catwoman runs off. The viewer might be led to believe that Catwoman swiped Batman's mask, and thus also learned his identity, but Batman is still wearing his mask and quickly notices Catwoman stole his utility belt.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Batman manages to get his utility belt back from Catwoman and the two of them manage to beat Katsu, with the disk the two found having evidence against him. But Catwoman gets away and the police still think that she and Batman are working together as a criminal team.
  • Bond One-Liner: Downplayed due to being non-lethal, after Catwoman defeats Batman in their first meeting, knocking them both off a roof and landing on her feet while he lands on his back full force and is knocked out, she stands over him and taunts him "another cat fact, we always land on our feet".
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Once Catwoman stops running from Batman and fights back, she has the upper hand the entire time. Their "fight" lasts less than ten seconds before she tackles him off the roof, sending him crashing down below and using him to cushion the impact for herself while he takes the full force of it himself.
  • Dating Catwoman: The police believe that with Catwoman's appearance she and Batman are now working together, when neither of them had even heard of each other before. Ironically, Catwoman reads the newspaper about their "partnership" and instantly gains a crush on him, before heading out to set up their "date."
  • Karma Houdini: Catwoman escapes from Batman and the police, even after stealing Batman's belt and being an established cat burglar.
  • Living Crashpad: During their fight, Catwoman tackles Batman and sends them both off the roof they are on. Catwoman stays on top of Batman as they fall and when they crash on top of another roof of a lower building Batman takes the full force of the fall while softening Catwoman's own landing and allowing her to land on her feet.
  • MacGuffin: The cat statue that Catwoman tries to steal. It is the reason she steals Batman's belt, and it is revealed to contain a disk filled with evidence against Katsu.
  • Minor Crime Reveals Major Plot: The cat statue that Catwoman is so keen on stealing? It contains a mini-disc holding information on a Yakuza faction trying to expand into Gotham.
  • Mugging the Monster: Catwoman uncharacteristically balks when it's revealed the cat statue she's trying to steal belongs to a Yakuza family, even offering to leave the statue alone entirely. Unfortunately Katsu has already decided She Knows Too Much, necessitating a rescue from Batman.
  • Pre-Asskicking One-Liner: When Catwoman finally stops running away from Batman she warns him "corner a cat, get scratched" right before charging him. She quickly knocks him off the roof and knocks him out, while she lands perfectly on her feet.
  • Spanner in the Works: The cat statue contains a lot of information needed for Katsu's plans for expanding his Yakuza family into Gotham, so he suspects Catwoman is trying to steal it for a rival crime family. Catwoman just wanted it because it was cat-related, and their kerfuffle puts Batman on their trail. Whoops!
  • Stealth Hi/Bye: Batman and Catwoman both do this.
    • During the chase between them, Catwoman looks behind briefly and thinks she has escaped Batman, only for him to suddenly appear in front of her.
    • Catwoman disappears as soon as she hears police sirens approaching and later does it again after giving Batman the last piece of his belt back.
  • "Take That!" Kiss: During the chase between them, Catwoman briefly traps Batman under some construction equipment and blows him a goodbye kiss before leaving.
Catwoman: Hate to cut our first date short, cutie, but I like to leave a man wanting more.
  • Victor Gains Loser's Powers: Catwoman steals Batman's utility belt after she beats him in their first meeting, claiming she's taking it as "something to remember him by." She actually stole it because she wanted to figure out how to use the drone he used to follow her so she can steal a cat statue she wants.
