Recap / The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes! S2 E23 "New Avengers"

Go To

Kang the Conqueror stages a daring breakout — by which we mean several versions of him, from different timelines resulting from his time traveling shenanigans, stage his daring breakout. Calling themselves the Council of Kangs, they accelerate Kang's big plan by letting him out, allowing him to rig one of Tony's arc reactors into a time machine so effective that the Avengers never existed once it starts up! Fortunately help arrives from not one, but five or six unlikely places, as a new Avengers team is hastily formed to combat this menace — but can they succeed when the Avengers never even existed to fail?

Tropes:

  • All of the Other Reindeer: After Tony's message plays out in full to the different heroes:
Wolverine: [to Spider-Man] I'm pretty sure he was talkin' to you, bub.
  • Apocalyptic Log: One way of looking at Tony's big plan.
  • A Day in the Limelight: For Spider-Man, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, the Thing/Ben Grimm, Wolverine, and War Machine.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: As said by Kang when he's smacking around War Machine:
"You wish to be Avengers?! Then share their fate!"
  • Big "NO!": Kang, as Spider-Man messes with his time machine. He does it again, as he fades away.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Tony took the liberty of setting up a "New Avengers Protocol", in the event something terrible the main team. Thanks to Kang wiping them out, the call goes out to a handful of heroes they have met up to this point.
  • Don't Think, Feel: Sums up Spidey's entire approach to dismantling Kang's time machine via spider-sense.
  • Godzilla Threshold: The Council of Kangs vowed never to interfere in a Kang's given timeline, but they report that this show's version of the Avengers continues to grow in power and has the potential to interfere in other timelines. In response, the Council frees Kang and gives him back his suit so that he can eliminate the team.
  • Me's a Crowd: The Council of Kangs, all alternate versions of Kang from different realities. One of them's a woman. Just don't think too hard about that.
    • The Ultimate Version of Kang was a woman too. In that case, a future version of Sue Storm. Maybe that's an anlogue to this version.
  • Motive Decay: This episode has been cited as one for Kang, as he seems more interested in being a generic conqueror instead of focusing on defending Earth from a Kree/Skrull war (which was a big part of his motivation in Season 1). He also never mentions Princess Ravonna. In fairness, Kang's screentime is fairly limited and the New Avengers aren't bothering to ask him what he hopes to gain out of all this.
  • No Ontological Inertia: The result of Spidey shutting down the time machine. Tony's still getting that bill from Luke Cage though.
  • Other Me Annoys Me: Kang clearly doesn't care for his counterparts, especially as they make light of his imprisonment.
  • Pet the Dog: When it's all over, the team makes Spider-Man a reserve Avenger.
  • Seen It All: After Spidey suggests Kang is bringing his future to the present, Iron Fist asks if such a thing is even possible.
Thing: Eh, the FF have seen weirder stuff.
  • Shadow Discretion Shot: Wolverine "just wiped out the dinosaurs! Again!"
  • Spectacular Spinning: Kang's time machine, in the vein of Magneto's Mutant Machine.
  • Fastball Special:
  • Superman Stays Out of Gotham: According to the Thing, the rest of the Fantastic Four are away on a scientific mission. He's only there because he stayed home to watch a game.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Princess Ravonna, though the comic tie-in did get around to dealing with her.
