Elizabeth goes to see Jared and reveals herself as someone working for the Centre, like his parents. She tells Jared he's in danger, and she's going to get him someplace safe. As it happens, Larrick is tracking them through a tracking device he planted in Jared's backpack - though he loses the trail when Elizabeth gets rid of the backpack, he poses as a detective and finds out a woman picked him up.
Stan makes plans to send Nina away to a city where she'll be safe, and where he can visit her - he even buys a used car for her to drive, and pays in cash to avoid filling out the registration paperwork. However, when he returns to the safe house, he finds Arkady there, along with two men who have beaten Nina up. He tells Stan if he gives the Soviets information on the Echo computer program (part of Arpanet), then Stan and Nina will be free to go live their own lives; otherwise, Nina will be sent back to Moscow to face charges. Stan approaches Gaad about looking into the program. Oleg, who doesn't want to see Nina sent back, gives her an envelope full of money in secret.
In addition to worrying about Jared, Philip has to approach Fred to ask him to get paint samples involving the Stealth program. Fred isn't sure, as he doesn't think he'd have access, but Philip and Elizabeth appeal to him by talking about Jared, and he agrees to try.
Elsewhere, Sandra tells Stan she's going to live with the man she went away with, Martha steals a number of files for "Clark", and Paige continues to be suspicious about her parents' late-night activities.
This episode contains examples of:
- Beauty Is Never Tarnished: Averted - Nina looks realistically beat up by Arkady's goons.
- Call-Back: Elizabeth again wonders what would Paige and Henry be capable of in case of a crisis.
- Dodgy Toupee: Discussed: Martha tells "Clark" she's aware of his toupee.
- Impersonating an Officer: Larrick does this a couple of times when he's following Elizabeth and Jared.
- Modesty Bedsheet: Both Martha and Philip hold the bedsheets over their chests after they have sex.
- My Biological Clock Is Ticking: Martha brings up the idea of having children, which "Clark" does not want to do, or even talk about. This becomes an important part of their relationship over the next several episodes.
- Premature Encapsulation: Though this isn't the first episode that it's mentioned, Arkady specifically tells Stan to get him information, in exchange for Nina's freedom, on Echo, which is the name of the season finale episode.
- Shout-Out: Henry watches Diff'rent Strokes at one point. He also talks to Philip about going to see Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, even though he didn't think much of Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
- Stan tries to bond with Matthew by bringing him a bootleg copy of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
- Something Only They Would Say: Elizabeth, disguised as a social worker, gets Jared's attention by saying, "I think the three things a person should focus on every day are health, growth and community, don't you?", which is a signal that she's from the Centre.
