Upset that he's seemingly the only one at his school without a special power or talent, Gumball decides to become Mrs. Jotunheim's apprentice to learn magic.

Tropes:

  • All Trolls Are Different: One who gets bigger and stronger from trolling others, then eats them.
  • Animate Inanimate Object: Mrs. Jötunheim owns a magic carpet that has a mind of its own. It starts beating up Gumball in retaliation for him dusting it off with a dust beater.
  • Bait-and-Switch Comment: When asked by Gumball if trolls eat people, Ms. Jötumheim answers that they bait people to feed on their anger... before eating them.
  • Beat Them at Their Own Game: Gumball defeats the troll by trolling him back.
  • Brick Joke: During the montage, Gumball stuffs a bag full of trash into a hat. When Mrs. Jötunheim gives him the same hat to stop the troll, all the trash falls on him before he puts it on.
  • A Day in the Limelight: For Mrs. Jötunheim. In fact, this is the first episode that features her in which Hector (her giant son) has no real role in it besides a quick cameo.
  • Hat of Power: Gumball wears a wizard's hat that gives him magic powers to fight the troll. Mrs. Jötunheim calls it the demo version of her magic, the only apparent difference is that the visual effects have watermarks superimposed over them.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: What kicks off the story, as Gumball doesn't think he has a special ability like his classmates.
  • Inopportune Voice Cracking: Mr. Small's voice cracks hard just as he is trying to assert his masculinity to the troll.
  • Literal Metaphor: "Feeding the troll" is an online colloquialism for responding to trolling attempts. Here it literally refers to a troll feeding on people that react to his taunting.
  • Mooching Master: Mrs. Jötunheim lets Darwin and Gumball be her apprentices, but just gives them a bunch of chores she pretends are training.
  • Rooting for the Empire: In-Universe, Gumball talks about being a wizard like that kid who went to a castle and learned magic from a guy with a beard. When Darwin asks if he means "the kid with the scarf and glasses", Gumball says he means "the guy who spoke to snakes and had no nose."
  • Success Hallucinations: At first it seems like Gumball and Darwin are actually getting superpowers from doing Mrs. Jötunheim's chores, but it's actually them hallucinating from the cleaning fluid fumes.
  • To Serve Man: The troll eats Darwin and nearly eats Mr. Small. He also ate other people in between.
  • Shout-Out: Gumball describes Harry Potter when talking about wanting to be a wizard.
  • Through a Face Full of Fur: Despite being covered in fluff, Mr. Small is still able to go red in the face over the troll claiming that global warming isn't real, and then making fun of him.
  • Wax On, Wax Off: Gumball thinks the chores he is given will teach him magic, but Mrs. Jötunheim tells him otherwise later.
  • Writing Around Trademarks: At one point, Gumball and Darwin are clearly talking about Harry Potter without saying the name or that of the other characters in the series.
