Recap / The Addams Family S 1 E 5 The Addams Family Tree

Go To

Wednesday and Pugsley going to Harold Pomeroy's birthday party goes awry when the boy insults the family. To prove that their family is every bit as good as the Pomeroys, the Addamses hire a genealogist.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Bad Is Good and Good Is Bad: When Dr. Simms drops a few black names from the Pomeroy family tree, Gomez and Morticia can't help but feel impressed and admit they see why Pomeroy has such "pride" in the family name. Gomez then tries to talk up some of those names during the talk with Mr. Pomeroy, who tries to shift the conversation by raising his offer for the land deal.
Gomez: Don't you feel proud to be related to a pirate?
  • Bait-and-Switch: When Harold and his father show up at the Addams' house and tell them about the fight at the birthday party, we're led to believe that Pugsley was the one who gave Harold a black eye. But when Morticia says that it's best to apologize to them, it's Wednesday who apologizes for punching Harold, much to Mr. Pomeroy's shock and Gomez's mild amusement and pride at his daughter.
Mr. Pomeroy: She must've hit him while his back was turned.
    Gomez: [amused] In the eye?
  • Big Eater: As the children head for the party, Morticia calls to Pugsley that he's only allowed five pieces of cake.
  • The Bluebeard: Apparently the Pomeroys are related to a serial wife-killer from Boston.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Uncle Fester decides to avenge the family honor by shooting Pomeroy In the Back. When Gomez and Morticia chide him for dishonorable tactics, Fester answers that this way is safe.
  • Duel to the Death: Gomez and Morticia suggest a fight, using either swords or pistols, as a possible way to avenge the family honor. Uncle Fester doesn't think it's as sound as shooting the offender in the back.
  • Eye Scream: Wednesday blacks Harold's eye for insulting the family. The revelation shocks Mr. Pomeroy, who had believed Pugsley was responsible for it.
  • I'll Never Tell You What I'm Telling You!: Genealogist Dr. Simms drops a few black names from the Pomeroy family tree while denying that he could do so, due to professional courtesy.
  • In the Back: Uncle Fester sees no value in honorable fighting; his idea for how to deal with Pomeroy is to "shoot him in the back!"
  • Let's Fight Like Gentlemen: Gomez and Morticia balk at Uncle Fester's resolve to shoot Pomeroy In the Back, instead suggesting he defend the family "the honorable way" by challenging him to a duel. Fester refuses to fight with a sword, but is receptive to a Ten Paces and Turn-style duel until he realizes Pomeroy would also be given a loaded pistol.
  • Literal-Minded: When she hears her parents talking about getting the family tree analyzed, Wednesday thinks they mean a literal tree, specifically the one where Uncle Fester likes to sit.
  • Noodle Incident:
    • Gomez tells Uncle Fester to leave the Pomeroys to him, as he handled the gas inspector.
    • After it's revealed that it was Wednesday who gave Harold a black eye, Gomez calls bullshit when Mr. Pomeroy claims that she must've punched Harold in the eye while "his back was turned". Morticia notes however, that it is possible, as apparently something like that happened to her Cousin Curdle.
  • Worthless Treasure Twist: Mr. Pomeroy tries to get back into the Addamses' good graces after feuding with them over the incident at the birthday party. One of his men thinks some land the family owns has oil in it, and he wants to buy it, preferably at a normal price and without their knowledge about the oil. Pomeroy ends up offering far more than what Gomez originally paid for the land simply to try and shut off the conversation about the Pomeroy lineage. Gomez wonders why the man wanted it, as there's no value to it.
