Plot

The "Baum family" begin therapy with Dr. Boyd Sherman, a child and family psychiatrist who was on the to-do list of a dead future resistant. Without their realization, Weaver, on the advice of an aide at a photo shoot, sees Dr. Sherman about the original Catherine's daughter Savannah, who has realized that something is very wrong. She enlists his help with an AI problem.

Meanwhile, Derek discovers that Jesse, his lover in the future, is now in 2000s LA. After they rekindle their relationship, she confesses to him that she is AWOL and has gone back in time simply to escape the war but the viewer sees evidence that she has been secretly keeping him under observation.

Tropes

  • All Therapists Are Muggles: John and Sarah both desperately need therapy but are unable to truly confide in Dr. Sherman.
  • Bring My Brown Pants: Savannah leaves a puddle in terror when Weaver tries to order her to sit next to her for a publicity photo.
  • Dad the Veteran: Sarah's father was also a Vietnam vet. After Sarah's experiences in a Time War, she has begun to relate to his emotional state.
  • I Have This Friend: Concerned about John's mental state, Derek tells a story to Sarah about a friend of his in the future resistance who "went out to take a leak" and shot himself. A later conversation with Jesse reveals that he was talking about himself but Jesse stopped him.
  • "It" Is Dehumanizing: Weaver asking the aide how to deal with a child.
You have a child, right? What do you do with it?
  • Just a Machine: Weaver is noticeably unhappy when her lead scientist suggests destroying the Turk program and starting over again due to its unpredictable behaviour.
  • Kill and Replace: The female Terminator kills Dr. Sherman's receptionist in order to take over her role.
  • Living with the Villain: The Connors and Weaver unknowingly share the same family therapist.
  • Naked on Arrival: Rosie arrives naked from the future in an empty bus at night. She kills the bus driver for his clothes.
  • Modesty Bedsheet: Jesse and Derek after they have sex.
  • Monster of the Week: Rosie is the Terminator of the week, who is assigned to Dr. Sherman.
  • Mugged for Disguise: The female Terminator, Rosie kills a bus driver to get clothes on her initial arrival.
  • New Old Flame: Jesse and Derek used to be a relationship in their future timeline.
  • The Reveal: The ending of the episode finally reveals that John strangled Sarkissian to death defending Sarah.
  • Riddle for the Ages: Whether John's accident with a pistol was a genuine accident, a conscious suicide attempt, or a subconsciously self-destructive piece of recklessness.
  • Right Through His Pants: Derek and Jesse apparently both neglect to remove their jeans during their sex scene. They are shown apparently naked in bed afterwards, though.
  • Safety in Muggles: Cameron and the female Terminator mutually break off their fight in the elevator at Sherman's office when an innocent family get in. Specifically the little boy stares at how battle scarred they are and with his parents not seeing looks like he's working out what happened as Cameron and Summer try to keep from laughing.
  • The Shrink: Dr. Sherman is a talented and benevolent one.
    Derek: What's he like?
    Sarah: Curious, smart, annoying
Derek: So he's good at his job.
