Recap / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2012 S 5 E 9 Kagayeki Kintaro

Go To

The Turtles and Usagi must scale the mountain to Kintaro's destination, and also must confront Jei once and for all.

  • And the Adventure Continues: Usagi leaves Kintaro at the temple—saying there are others out there who need him.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy:
    • The Turtles never fully broke free of Jei's brainwashing, and he retakes control of them to attack Usagi at the temple.
    • This is also revealed to be what happened to Sumo Kuma, who also was one of Jei's puppets. After Jei is defeated, Kuma regains his senses and reveals he is one of the monks of Kintaro's temple.
  • Big "NO!": Jei's final words after his body is sent plummeting off the mountain at the end of the episode.
  • Demonic Possession: Jei's goal was to awaken Kintaro's spiritual powers and then attempt this trope by transferring his immortal soul into Kintaro's body, becoming even more powerful in the process.
  • Disney Villain Death: After Jei is defeated by Usagi, his body plummets off the mountain.note
  • Gone Horribly Right: Jei manipulated events because he wanted Kintaro's true power to be awakened before attempting to take over his body. However, Kintaro's power completely freed the Turtles from Jei's control, which leads to his defeat.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Jei summoned the turtles so he could control them and use them to get Kintaro's powers. The turtles end up thwarting his plan when he doesn't realize Kintaro has freed them from his control.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: This is part of Jei's fate at the hands of Usagi. Feigning still being brainwashed, Leo throws his katana right through Jei's heart to halt his soul transfer into Kintaro. Usagi later uses this katana to defeat Jei and send his body into a Disney Villain Death.
  • Mythology Gag: Jei's death—being impaled through the chest and sent plummeting off a cliff—mirrors one of the attempts to kill him in Usagi Yojimbo. No word on whether or not he survived here, though.
  • Pet the Dog: At the end of the episode, Kintaro is sad to see Usagi go. Usagi promises to return should he be needed.
  • Pretend to Be Brainwashed: The turtles realize that Kintaro "knocked the evil out of them" and freed them from Jei's control. Jei doesn't realize this and the turtles use it to their advantage. They "put on their evil eyes" and get close to him so they can free Kintaro when Jei doesn't suspect a thing.
  • Speech Bubbles: Stan Sakai's trademark skull speech bubble finally makes an appearance when Jei dies.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Kintaro has spent this story arc being chided by Usagi, outright mocked by the Turtles, and suffering various pratfalls. On the mountain, though, Leo shows him compassion and compliments him on his bravery.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Kintaro becomes much nicer and more compassionate once his actual powers are awakened in defending Usagi from Jei.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Jei says the Turtles have been this to him all along. They were never truly free of his control, and he's been spying on the group through their eyes.
