Recap / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2012 S 3 E 18 The Deadly Venom

Go To

Stockman administers his mind control serum to Karai, who Shredder then turns on the Turtles.

  • Bad Boss:
    • Shredder casually orders Karai to attack Steranko/Rocksteady to test her loyalty via mind control.
    • Subverted in Stockman's case. Shredder says that Stockman did a good job putting Karai under his control and rewards him with a candy bar.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: It's Karai's turn now, and unlike last time, she doesn't overcome it by the end of the episode.
  • Chekhov's Skill: The healing mantra Splinter teaches Leo, which they both later use to counteract Karai's venom.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: When Karai attacks Casey she says " I want to hurt you, very slowly."
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Splinter is still recovering from the nasty wound inflicted by the mind-controlled Slash in "Clash of the Mutanimals".
    • Casey foolishly boasting his name to the Foot loudly in "Casey Jones Vs. The Underworld" and his actions in general during that episode come back to bite him, as Shredder specifically targets him.
    • Mikey mentions having been bitten/stung by numerous creatures throughout the series, such as the squirrels, Dream Beavers, and wasps.
    • Raph agrees to work with Mikey to find Casey with the stipulation of "No Turflytle!"
  • Crucified Hero Shot: The turtles (save Leo) shackled and hung from the subway station support beam by the Foot ninjas.
  • Dating What Daddy Hates: Kirby can be seen glaring at the sight of Casey and April together.
  • Dead Man Honking: Raphael is bitten by one of Karai's snakes while driving the Turtle Van. the van crashes and overturns, and the horn is heard blaring as she scene cuts.
  • Empowered Badass Normal: Karai is now half-snake mutant, half-human.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: Leo's T-phone wallpaper when he receives a call from Karai on Raph's phone is interesting to say the least.
  • Gory Discretion Shot: We don't actually see the worm enter Karai's ear, but we see everything leading up it, and watch Karai shriek and writhe in agony before succumbing to the worm's affect on her mind.
  • Hand Seals: Splinter throws some up, complete with mantra to perform...
  • Healing Hands: Splinter knows this technique and teaches it to Leonardo.
  • Idiot Ball: Casey acts like a total moron when he meets Karai. The fact that she makes it clear she wants to torture and kill him doesn't seem to bother him, but rather intrigues him.
  • "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight: Another episode revolving around mind control, another example of this trope, specifically from Leo to Karai. It doesn't work.
  • Kiss of Death: How Karai gives Casey his dose of venom.
  • Literal Ass-Kissing: Very narrowly averted when Mikey attempts to Suck Out the Poison from an unconscious Casey.
  • Mood Whiplash: Mikey's usual sense of humor clashes jarringly with the serious tone of the episode.
  • Never Say "Die": Karai is told to "Destroy" and "Eliminate" Splinter and the Turtles, and Karai states that her victims will "Expire."
  • Not Listening to Me, Are You?: When Casey is imitating the action from the movie, April starts going on about how her head disappeared and how she has to walk around without a head. Subverted when Casey says, a minute later, that her head is sure to turn up sooner or later.
  • Not Quite Back to Normal: Stockman seems to think he returned Karai to her human form. Well, her mind seems back to normal (before she gets mind controlled), but her body is still the same shapeshifting serpent she has been since last season.
  • Partial Transformation: Karai has gained a greater control over her mutation, being able to turn her arms into the snake-headed appendages of her mutant self while the rest of her stays the same.
  • Shout-Out: Unlike the previous use of the worms, this one is closer to Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, with the worm entering Karai's ear and allowing Shredder to directly control her brain.
  • Suck Out the Poison: Discussed by Mikey and Raph when they find Casey succumbing to the effects of Karai's venom:
Mikey: You're gonna have to suck the poison out, brah!
Raph: I'm not sucking the poison out! I'm driving! You suck it!
  • Talking Is a Free Action: For some reason, Karai doesn't even attempt to attack Leo while the latter is performing the healing mantra, even though he's standing perfectly still and not doing anything. She doesn't even react until after he's already done.
  • The Worf Effect: In the opening, the now brainwashed Karai is easily able to subdue Rocksteady/Steranko, one of Shredder's strongest henchmen.
  • To the Pain: After Karai bites Casey, she describes the effects, with Casey experiencing each one in the sequence that she mentions it
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Kirby is enraged when Donnie can't do anything to save April, and lashes out at Splinter as well when he appears to be failing as well.
