Recap / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2012 S 2 E 6 Target April O Neil

Go To

April tries to resume her normal life, but realizes that she may have put the turtles and Casey in jeopardy when Karai starts hunting her again to test a new invention.

Tropes related in this episode:

  • Abusive Parent: Shredder's threats toward Karai at the beginning of the episode imply that he is this.
  • Aesop: Other than your standard theme of Forgiveness, while you can have every good reason to be angry at someone, sometimes there are things that can't be controlled.
  • A.I. Is a Crapshoot: Chrome Dome goes out of control after it sees April. Of course, this is due to the fact that the Kraang programmed it to capture her.
  • Badass Normal: Casey Jones held his own well against the upgraded foot soldiers.
  • Blood Knight: Casey is all too happy to get into a fight.
  • Callback:
    • Up until the climax, April is still mad at the turtles.
    • Bradford's suit is back as a robot, nicknamed Chrome Dome.
    • The Kraang are still after April.
    • April still can't fight against Karai with ease, though she does a bit better this time.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Princess Zee quit the team because the others forgot about her birthday.
  • Dual Wielding: Chrome Dome wields an energy-whip in one hand, along with a light-saber katana in the other.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending:
    • Donnie finally got a kiss from April. Granted, it was on the cheek, but it was enough to make him happy.
    • April forgiving the Turtles in general.
  • Easily Forgiven: It takes another incident in which April is in danger to forgive the turtles. To be fair, though, part of this was due to Casey agreeing with Donnie's point that there are things we can't control.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • Casey recalls the time when he lost his friend, which was an accident beyond his control (which Donnie had told April earlier). This is how April finds it easier to forgive the turtles.
    • The Shredder warns Karai that if she makes any more dealings with the Kraang without his approval, the results will not be pleasant. When Karai orders Chrome Dome to kill April O'Neil, the Kraang override Chrome Dome's programming to capture April alive and to destroy all threats, i.e. Karai.
  • Forgiveness: Donnie and Casey told April that there are some things that can't be controlled, which leads her to forgive the Turtles, and saving her life doesn't hurt as well.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Chrome Dome is destroyed via its own weapon.
  • Impossible Shadow Puppets: Mikey distracts some Kraang droids with these. The first was plausible, but they got more implausible with each one.
  • Improbable Weapon User: Casey uses his hockey stick against the foot soldiers.
  • Ironic Echo: Before April leaves Donnie, he tells that some things are just far beyond their control. After Casey tells April about how he lost a friend during an accident, he says the exact same words Donnie told her earlier.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Despite Donnie actually helping April in her time of need, you can't deny that he left his brothers to deal with a dangerous robot on their own.
  • Jerkass Realization: Through Donnie and Casey's advice (how some things will be out of their control) along with hearing Casey's story about how he destroyed a friendship, April felt ashamed for letting her temper get the better of her and pushing the Turtles away over an accident they had caused.
  • Kick Them While They Are Down: Karai assaults April while the latter is not yet back to the Turtles' side. It worked like a charm.
  • King Mook: Chrome Dome is a far more advanced model of the Foot-Bots and manages to give both Karai and the Turtles a tough fight.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Karai deals with the Kraang behind Shredder's back, and sends Chrome Dome after April as Revenge by Proxy against Splinter. The Kraang, needing April alive for their own plans, override this programming, causing Chrome Dome to attack Karai instead.
  • Mêlée à Trois: Between the Turtles, Karai, and Chrome Dome. The Turtles are trying to save April from Karai, who wants to kill her, and Chrome Dome is acting on the Kraang's orders to capture her, which results in the robot turning on the Foot.
  • Misplaced Retribution: April's anger towards the Turtles. While she has every right to be upset over her father being mutated, what happened was something the Turtles had no control over, and April's decision to never forgive the Turtles for a genuine accident ends up straining her friendships with them. It takes Donnie's advice, Casey telling her a story about losing his own friend in similar circumstances and being put in danger again to convince April to let go of her anger and forgive the Turtles.
  • Multi-Armed and Dangerous: The Foot Bots now have an extra set of arms.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: April had this when she felt guilty for her actions towards the Turtles, especially Donnie, and putting Casey in danger because of her grudge against the turtles.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Much like his 1987 counterpart, Chrome Dome's only weak spot is on his back.
    • After being kissed by April at the end of the episode, Donatello screams "I love being a turtle", a quote that was frequently used in the live-action films and the 2003 animated series.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: When Karai decides to order Chrome Dome to kill April, the Kraang work to underhandedly sabotage the assassination attempt since they have their own plans for April.
  • Rejected Apology: Donnie tried to apologize to April for mutating Kirby, but she was too busy chewing his head off. She only changes her mind when Casey explained how he lost a friend over an incident along with his and Donnie's advices about not controlling everything.
  • Revenge by Proxy: Karai outright admits this is the reason she's after April, claiming she's "returning the favor" for her mother's murder by taking someone Splinter cares for.
  • Sequel Escalation: Could be seen as one to Karai's Vendetta, which also features Karai chasing after April trying to capture/harm her. Only this time, foot robots, a foot Elite Mook and the Kraang help Karai along, with the turtles taking a more active role in defending April as well.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Stalker with a Crush: Donnie still can't let go of the fact that April is gone for good.
  • Stepping-Stone Sword: April uses throwing knives as steps to reach the fire escape of a building during her chasing.
  • 10-Minute Retirement: Spoofed when the princess on the anime quits the team. They say she's quit about 27 times before.
    • The same can be said for April. She has been mad with the turtles since the ending of season two's first episode and yet, she forgives the turtles in the end here.
  • Title Drop: Chrome Dome makes that drop when he activates his "subroutine". Though considering what happens through the episode, it's thematic as well.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Donatello, via Power of Love. Karai, who normally gives Leo problems in combat, tries to end April and gets disarmed and knocked down within a matter of seconds...by Donnie.
    • April shows that she's improved as well, and though she still can't beat Karai, she was able to do noticeably better this time.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: April, up until the end of the episode, is quite harsh towards the Turtles for what was really an unfortunate accident.
  • Use Their Own Weapon Against Them: Mikey finishes off Chrome Dome with its own Laser Blade.
  • Was Too Hard on Him:
    • After pushing Donnie's attempts to fix things between them and listens to his advices about how some things can't be control, April goes to hang out with Casey then listens to his story about how he ruined a friendship once. Hearing Casey say the same thing Donnie said earlier, April felt guilty for being so hard on the Turtles but before she thought about fixing things with them the Foot Clan came to attack her and Casey. When the situation got out of hand, April realized that Donnie and Casey were right about not controlling everything as she calls the Turtles, mainly Donnie, for help. After they came to her rescue and forgave them, April gave the Turtles her own apology for her behavior, especially Donnie, not understanding that there will be times when things will be beyond their control.
    • During the battle with Karai, April told the rest of the Turtles to lay off on Donnie as she explains to them that if he hadn't answered her call for help she wouldn't have been captured or worse.
