Recap / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2003 S 6 E 1 Future Shellshock

Go To

The Turtles and Master Splinter were enjoying some well-earned downtime in the Lair, when suddenly they find themselves in a strange city full of aliens and floating cars. Confused and disoriented, they try to figure out what's going on, and just exactly where, or when, they are.

First appearance of Cody Jones, Serling, Constable Biggles, Jammerhead and the Street Phantoms

This episode provides examples of

  • Art Shift: From this episode onwards, the characters are redesigned to be more angular and the Turtles are given different heights for the rest of the series, Raph being the tallest, Mike being the shortest. While Leo appears to be a bit taller than Don in this episode, in most of the other episodes, Don is portrayed as taller than Leo. The crack on Leo's shell in the previous two seasons is also gone.
  • Book Ends: The episode opens with Raph and Mikey fighting over the TV remote. It ends with them fighting over the TV remote in 2105.
  • Can't Take Anything with You: The Turtles and Splinter are all transported to the future minus their clothes and weapons.
  • Continuity Nod: Cody's room contains many items from the previous seasons, including a Foot banner, The Utrom Shredder's armor, Casey's hockey mask and golf bag, The Fugitoid's original body, A TCRI canister, an Utrom exosuit, the Turtle Tunneler, Raph's Shell Cycle, the 2nd Time Around sign from April's shop, a damaged Shrednaut mech, the Shell Sub, the Turtles' masks and the Sewer Sled.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Cody's Time Window was meant to simply view the past, but it accidentally brought the Turtles and Splinter to the future, and he has no idea how to fix it.
  • Disaster Dominoes: Accompanies the Turtles' arrival in 2105. They set off a series of traffic accidents, culminating in a truck going off the road (or rather, over the edge of it) and derailing a train.
  • Fish out of Temporal Water: The Turtles and Master Splinter.
  • The Future: 2105, to be precise.
  • Intangibility: The Street Phantoms' signature move.
  • Late to the Realization: It takes Cody a while to realize that Mikey isn't there with the others.
  • Lonely Rich Kid: Cody is the owner of O'Neil Tech and heir to a vast fortune, which makes him a tempting target for criminals. All of his needs are provided for him, while he stays inside.
  • Mythology Gag: When Mikey falls out of a moving truck and lands on the windscreen of another vehicle, the driver of the vehicle looks like Bebop.
  • Naked on Arrival: The time warp leaves everyone's clothes and equipment back in the past, leaving the gang naked for quite some time until Cody offers to provide them with new outfits.
  • Not So Above It All: Splinter chastises the Turtles fighting over the remote and restrains them for it before saying his soaps are on in five minutes.
  • Old Hero, New Pals
  • Shout-Out:
    • Serling's greeting of "Come with me if you want to live."
    • He also says "I pity the fool who tries to get around without an enviro-pack, graviton regulator or wrist translator."
    • Serling's name is likely a shout out to Rod Serling, whose most famous show frequently dealt with aliens, robots, and time travel.
    • When Raph leaps from a vehicle and Mikey doesn't catch him, Mikey says "Ru-roh!"
    • At one point Mikey calls Serling "Robby," much to Serling's annoyance.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: During the truck chase, the Turtles and Splinter suddenly find themselves struggling to breathe and move. As Serling later explains, aliens from planets with different atmospheres and gravity living in the same city means everyone needs special tech to breathe and move normally from one area to the next.
  • Techno Babble: Don and Cody
  • Time Skip: Roughly 100 years into the Turtles' future, to the year 2105.
  • We Will Meet Again: Before fleeing, Jammerhead says the Turtles and Splinter are on his list.
  • Wham Line:
Cody: It belonged to my great-grandparents.
    Splinter: Your great-grandparents?
Cody: Casey Jones and April O'Neil. My name is Cody Jones and this is New York City in the year 2105.
