Recap / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987) S04E34 "The Big Cufflink Caper!"

Go To

There has been a string of robberies by the Mafia, but they only seem interested in stealing cufflinks.

Tropes:

  • Cool, but Stupid: The Turtles jump at the chance to stop the mafia from stealing cufflinks. Not because its super important (as far as they know), but because they're in a rut. Even then they acknowledge that it's a really stupid premise.
  • Hijacked by Ganon: It's revealed that Big Louie and his mobsters are working for The Shredder.
  • Informed Attribute: According to the Shredder, the cufflink is made from an explosive composite that, if detonated, could destroy an entire city. When he accidentally uses it, it blows up a wall in the Technodrome, but it leaves Shredder, Krang and the rest of the Technodrome unscathed. Either the inside of the Technodrome is made of a super-dense, fictional metal that could width-stand a nuke, the cufflink's explosive capabilities have dulled with age, or Shredder was just wrong.
  • My Little Panzer: One of the "retired" toys at the retirement ceremony is the Little Wonder Junior Assault-Rifle, a toy gun that fires actual lasers.
  • Never My Fault: After Shredder accidentally wastes the cufflink after Krang convinces him that it was a dud, he video-chats with the Turtles just to curse them out for giving him the real cufflink instead of the fake one. Even the Turtles don't seem to get his train of logic.
  • Shout-Out: One of the toys being retired is "Transfarmers", a line of robot toys that transform into farming vehicles, an obvious reference to Transformers.
  • Too Clever by Half: Shredder manages to get the real explosive cufflink, but Krang thinks its the dud because there's no way the turtles would have let him get away with the real one. Believing him, Shredder tosses the cufflink behind him, blowing up some of the machinery in the Technodrome and wasting the explosive meant to free the Technodrome.
