Recap / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987) S04E23 "Leonardo Lightens Up"

Go To

When Splinter leaves town and leaves Leonardo in charge, the other turtles quickly get tired of his uptight bossiness. When he's accidentally zapped by a personality altering ray and becomes a funloving guy, the Turtles quickly realize that they actually miss the old Leonardo and work together to find a way to bring him back to normal.

Tropes:

  • Beat Them at Their Own Game: In order to catch Leonardo to change him back to normal, Splinter puts on a fun-loving routine and coaxes him into a skateboard race that leads to him being trapped in a trash can.
  • Gone Horribly Right: After using the personality modifier on Leonardo, the other turtles quite like his fun loving and lighthearted behaviour, but soon takes a turn for the worse as Leonardo starts pulling pranks and behaving irresponsibly, motivating Donatello, Michelangelo and Raphael to try and turn him back to his normal yet bossy, mature and responsible self.
  • Hydrant Geyser: One of the pranks Leonardo pulls is opening a hydrant that floods the others out of the Turtle Van.
  • Loud of War: G. Cleff, the antagonist of the episode, wreaks havoc on the city by using an amplified stereo system with sound waves powerful enough to weaken the foundation of buildings and other objects.
  • Never My Fault: When Leonardo gets zapped by the personality ray, Michelangelo and Raphael are quick to blame Donatello for it. Donatello points out he was trying to get the two to put the raygun down.
  • We Want Our Jerk Back!: The Turtles accidentally shot a ray at Leonardo, changing his personality. The good news he's no longer a control freak since Splinter put him in charge while he's gone, and just wants to have fun. The bad news, he's also now an uncontrollable prankster.
Michelangelo: Dudes, it looks like using the personality modifying ray on Leonardo was a real no-brainer.
Raphael: Well that figures, it was your idea.
Michelangelo: Yeah, well it was yours too, dude!
Donatello: Okay, let's not argue. We all wanted Leonardo to lighten up, remember?
Michelangelo: Yeah, but not like this! The dude's turned into a walking whoopee cushion.
Donatello: I never thought I'd say this, but I'm actually starting to miss the old Leonardo.
