Recap / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987) S02E13 "Return of the Technodrome"

Go To

Splinter's going out of town on a pilgrimage. Meanwhile, Krang is sick and tired of the Shredder's constant failures and decides to go to Earth to finish the Turtles off once and for all!

Tropes:

  • Bowdlerize: The UK Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles edit of the episode removes the shot of the Turtles using an exploding throwing star to gain access to the Technodrome, meaning that they instead gain access via an unexplained huge smoking hole in the Technodrome's side.
  • Call-Back: May have been unintentional, but moments before his battle with Shredder, Splinter references his previous failed attempt at becoming human, and subsequent acceptance of his new life as a mutant.
Splinter: Hamato Yoshi is no longer. There is only Splinter.
Shredder: And soon, he will be gone as well.
  • Inconsistent Coloring: In multiple shots throughout the episode, Donatello's purple mask and armbands are colored bright pink.
  • Instant Sedation: Splinter manages to knock out Rocksteady with a "sleep-spice".
  • Shout-Out: Splinter and Shredder sensing each other's presence and their big climactic fight is similar to Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader facing off in A New Hope.
  • Villain Ball: When the turtles, April and Splinter are completely surrounded and outnumbered by Shredder's army, Krang declares that he will kill them himself and prepares to fire a laser at them and it looks like it's over. But because of the excessive amount of power needed to open the portal to get the technodrome from Dimension X to earth, the capacitors are completely drained and the weapon doesn't work, giving the turtles, April and Splinter a chance to escape. Had Krang just let Shredder's army take care of everything, the turtles would have been overwhelmed and defeated.
