Recap / Teen Titans Go S 5 E 6 My Name Is Jose

Go To

The Titans beg Raven to give them new superpowers, so she decides to give them all weird powers while giving herself Superman's strengths.

  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Stated verbatim, albeit sarcastically, by Cyborg when Raven tries to tell him that her magic will give them new powers but she can't control which ones.
  • Blessed with Suck: All of the Titans have to deal with severe drawbacks from their new powers, though they eventually learn to master them. Even Raven, who brags that she got the best outcome, soon learns that Kryptonite Is Everywhere.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Turns out this is the reason Superman never deals with Gizmo when he fires a kryptonite laser at Raven, weakening her.
  • Damned by Faint Praise: When Raven tries telling the Titans that their own powers are already amazing, she gets to The Team Normal Robin and the best she can say is that he has great hair.
  • The Empath: Beast Boy becomes one after being given Ms. Saturn's powers, and immediately starts distressing over how the girl in a superhero team with emotion powers always ends up as a Damsel in Distress.
  • Hurl It into the Sun: This appears to be Gizmo's fate at the end of the episode, when Starfire attempts to deposit him in prison with her stretchy arms but accidentally slingshots him towards the sun, though it cuts away before he actually makes contact with it.
  • Kryptonite Factor: Raven smugly believes that she's pulled one over on the other Titans by gaining Superman's powers, until the team fights Gizmo and it turns out he has a Kryptonite-powered laser, discovering that she also has Superman's weakness.
  • New Powers as the Plot Demands: Raven uses her magic to change everyone's powers. Cyborg has Aqualad's powers, Beast Boy has Ms. Saturn's powers, Robin has Vibe's and Starfire has Plastic Man's. Raven gets the best deal out of it with Superman's powers.
  • Pokémon Speak: Jose the fish is this, who can only say "My Name is Jose."
  • Rubber Man: Starfire with Plastic Man's powers is this.
  • Speaks Fluent Animal: Cyborg learns how to talk with fish after gaining Aqualad's powers, though the only fish he's shown talking with is Jose.
  • This Looks Like a Job for Aquaman: After Raven's incapacitated by Gizmo's laser, the other Titans each use their own new powers to save the day. Then the episode ends with Beast Boy sensing that they need to help a bunch of electric eels that are having a dance-off and can't reach the phone to call for help with their lack of stretchy limbs, and the other Titans pointing out the odd frequency of this trope occurring in superhero stories.
  • Training Montage: After Raven says that the other Titans will need to deal with their stupid powers for a while before she'll transform them back so they'll appreciate what they had before, there's a sequence of the other Titans getting used to them and genuinely appreciating them.
