Recap / Teen Titans Go S 1 E 3 Drivers Ed

Go To

When Robin wrecks the Batmobile and gets his license suspended, he has to bum rides from the other Titans to get to where he wants to go. He eventually tries to get his license back through a driving instructor, but it turns out the driving instructor is actually a criminal who uses Driver's Ed students as getaway drivers.

Tropes in this Episode Include:

  • Chekhov's Gunman: The Demon who was accidentally released by Robin and roamed Jump City throughout the episode becomes plot relevant very late in the episode when dealing with the main antagonist.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Sure Ed was a criminal who was using Robin, but Robin allowing him to be Dragged Off to Hell is pretty extreme.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: This is the first time we see Robin unmasked, as a flashback shows him with Black Bead Eyes. Later on, it would be established that he has one normal looking eye and a lookalike parasite in place of the other one.
  • Getaway Driver: Robin takes up driver's ed after his license is suspended, but fails to realize that his instructor Ed is a bank robber using him as a getaway driver.
  • The Freelance Shame Squad: The other titans do this to Robin twice. The first is when he reveals that he got his drivers license after he blew up the Batmobile, the second when he fails his first driving test.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Both Robin and the other Titans.
    • First Robin brags about being a master driver twice and then repeatedly fails his test.
    • The other Titans mock him for crashing the Batmobile and failing his driver's test. Later, after a chase through the city, they end up crashing at every turn until the T-Car literally explodes while Robin didn't crash once and the car he drove remained intact.
  • Punny Name: Ed, the driver's ed instructor who really isn't.
  • Skewed Priorities: Robin reveals at the end of the episode that he knew what Ed was really up to, meaning he didn't care about the fact that he was aiding a criminal as long as he got a passed driving test out of him.
