Recap / Team 8 Chapter 5 "Difficult Preparations"

Go To

"She's really good. She works super hard and will do whatever it takes to improve herself. She's probably upset we didn't get to train tonight. It's like... it's like she has something to prove. I think that's exactly it, but I don't know what she's trying to prove, or to who."
Naruto

Short version

The team goes through the aftermath of defeating the spy; Shino's parents are proud and supportive, Hinata's father is cruel, and Kurenai helps Naruto to deposit his earnings but finds that the bankers want to deny him service. The following day, they depart for their C-ranked mission, but Hinata is completely worn out from "special family training" and falls asleep on Naruto's shoulder.

Longer version

Kurenai lets the team go early for the next day's mission. Hinata is confronted by her father at the Hyuuga compound, along with Neji and Hanabi. Hiashi forces her to train with Hanabi, who strongly resembles Hinata's late, kind mother. The reluctant Hinata loses. Having heard of Team 8's capture of the infiltrator, Hiashi tries to make Hinata reperform the 64 Palms technique. When the insecure Hinata does not, he puts her through abusive training through the night.

At home, Shino meets his mother and father. Misato, a serrated blade wielding ninja from Kirigakure, is far more expressive and emotional than her husband Shibi. Disturbed by the public perception of Naruto, Shino questions his father about it, who advises him to rely on firsthand knowledge.

Naruto asks Kurenai about their payment. She explains that payment for anything above D-rank is given through vouchers from the Hokage, secured with a sealing jutsu. To redeem it, Naruto would need a bank account, which Kurenai decides to help him set up.

After a verbal confrontation with two door guards, Kurenai and Naruto enter her bank. When the manager tries to refuse service to Naruto, Kurenai threatens to withdraw her patronage, causing him to relent. Naruto's account is set up, and the vouchers deposited. Kurenai advises Naruto on saving money for rainy days.

Kurenai interrogates the manager alone with a genjutsu. He reveals that the Council of Elders representative for banks and moneylenders said that they were to avoid serving Naruto. Kurenai recognizes an insidious change in Konoha. The manager fearfully accedes to Kurenai's wishes.

Naruto has dinner at Ichiraku's, and narrates to Teuchi the team's clash with the spy. Naruto recognizes that Hinata has something to prove. Iruka meets with Naruto there, and Naruto tells him of the battle and his extra training with Guy. Disconcerted, Iruka leaves to visit Kurenai.

Iruka arrives at Kurenai's cottage, where she offers him tea. When Iruka questions Kurenai's teaching methods, Kurenai explains that Naruto has little else to do, and that given proper guidance, he excels. She also expresses belief in Naruto's dream. Iruka is troubled when Kurenai details Naruto's treatment by the villagers. Before leaving, he vows to investigate the matter while Team 8 is on patrol.

In the morning, Naruto meets with Guy and Lee, to whom he explains the clash with the spy, and also that he will be on patrol for a few days. Guy trains the two in dealing with multiple opponents, using Naruto's shadow clones to assist in the lesson.

After training, Naruto encounters Hinata, who is badly exhausted and battered from the last night. Deeply worried for her, Naruto takes her to Ichiraku's, where Ayame helps her clean up. The two genin meet with Shino and Kurenai at the Hokage's tower for the assignment. Naruto explains the situation, and Shino and Kurenai are very concerned. Hinata is baffled by the kindness those around her show to her.

Tropes:

  • Abusive Parents: Made quite clear here; Hiashi unreasonably puts Hinata through "special family training" that leaves her badly bruised and exhausted the next day.
  • Government Conspiracy: The manager of Kurenai's bank admits to mistreating Naruto at the wishes of the Village Council representative for the bankers and moneylenders. Kurenai and Iruka speculate on how deep it goes.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Despite her achievements with her teammates and her victory over the infiltrating spy, Hinata still considers herself a failure in the eyes of her clan, and cannot understand the kindness shown towards her.
  • Not So Stoic: A small moment, but Shino expresses his concern for Hinata's well-being in light of the "training."
  • Original Character: Misato Aburame, a kunoichi from Kirigakure and Shino's mother.
  • Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: Shibi and Misato Aburame, Shino's parents.
  • Sleep Cute: After the exhaustion from her father's abuse the prior night, Hinata falls asleep on Naruto's shoulder on a bench.
