Recap / Tangled: The Series S2E15 "The Brothers Hook"

Go To

Rapunzel learns to her delight that Hook Hand is performing in a concert nearby and takes everyone to go see him. It is a happy reunion, except for Hook Hand's brother Hook Foot, who now is disturbed by bad memories.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Arc Words: "Live your dream."
  • Big Brother Bully: How Hook Foot views his brother Hook Hand, since the latter looked down on his dream of being a dancer.
  • Breather Episode: The last episode had the gang pursued by a relentless hunter, an ancient demon released from its prison, and Rapunzel being possessed by dark magic. This episode has puppet shows, a seal wedding, and a dance-off.
  • The Bus Came Back:
    • Hook Hand makes his first appearance in the series after being absent since the movie.
    • King Trevor of Equis also returns as the one who hired Hook Hand.
    • Trevor Jr. comes back as well, and has found true love in the form of Lucille.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Eugene encourages Hook Foot to take revenge against Hook Hand. Eventually, with the help of Hook Hand's bedraggled valet, he exacts revenge by filling Hook Hand's piano with fish. Deconstructed when Hook Hand gives a public apology to his brother just before he plays on the sabotaged piano.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Hook Hand refers to Hook Foot as Razzle Dazzle.
  • Foreshadowing: Hook Hand keeps calling Hook Foot "Razzle Dazzle". During the latter's dance-off with King Trevor, he uses his new jeweled hook (courtesy of his brother) to truly shine, hence "dazzle".
  • Gilligan Cut: Hook Hand describes a client who does not like to be kept waiting and is "a real jerk". Given he demeans his own brother and bullies Eugene, the latter sarcastically wonders what kind of person would merit being called a "jerk" by Hook Hand. ...We cut to King Trevor, who not only complains about being late by three minutes, but insults Hook Hand like there's no tomorrow.
  • Heel–Face Door-Slam: Downplayed. After Rapunzel tells him off for belittling his brother's dreams, Hookhand publically makes it up to Hookfoot by dedicating his next piece as an apology. Unfortunately, unknown to him, a prank staged to make him look bad was already in the works and humiliates him before King Trevor. Thankfully, the damage isn't so bad that Hookfoot can't dance for his brother's honor and salvage his reputation in the process.
  • Hypocrite: Years ago, it would've been laughable for a one-handed man to follow a career in piano playing. But thanks to Rapunzel's support, Hook Hand was able to follow his dream. And yet, he scoffs at his one-legged brother Hook Foot pursuing a career in dancing.
  • Hypocritical Heartwarming: Inverted. Hook Foot may have long-suffered his brother's insults, but he won't stand to see King Trevor spit upon Hook Hand's talent.
  • Interspecies Romance: Lucille is actually a sea lion.
  • Ironically Disabled Artist: Hook Hand (who wants to be a concert pianist) has a one-legged brother who aspires to become a dancer, and takes steps to do so over the course of the episode.
  • Jerkass Realization: Rapunzel makes Hook Hand realize he has been a jerk to Hookfoot for no reason.
  • Kick the Dog: Hook Hand did this constantly to Hook Foot by belittling his dream of dancing, denying him to work together in show business and singing a song bragging about his success and Hook Foot's lack thereof.
  • Lame Pun Reaction: everyone in the wedding gives King Trevor a cringe look when he reveals that Lucille is his "Seal of approval".
  • Meaningful Echo: "This hook is for artists."
  • Morality Chain: Rapunzel is the one who finally gets through to Hook Hand that his brother deserves support and respect, especially when Hook Foot himself couldn't get the message across simply by telling him.
  • Never My Fault: Hook Hand isn't one to own up that his brother Hook Foot would be as famous as him if only he didn't shoot down his dancing dream or his self-esteem. However, he does eventually see the light.
  • Pet the Dog: Not only does Hook Hand eventually apologize to Hook Foot and lend him his jeweled hook during the climax, he finally decides they should work together in show business, even presenting a bigger version of the flyer his brother made years ago.
  • Pun: "[Lucille] is the seal of approval!"
  • Put on a Bus: Hook Hand invites Hook Foot to join him on his world tour and Rapunzel encourages him to go with his brother to follow his dream.
  • Rule of Symbolism:
    • Whilst talking to Hook Hand about the error of his ways, Rapunzel shows him his old, plain hook. This represents how Hook Hand has forgotten his humble beginnings.
    • Hook Hand refusing to share his jeweled hooks symbolizes how he doesn't believe Hook Foot is an artist. Later, he gives one to him so he can out-dance King Trevor, finally accepting Hook Foot as a fellow artist.
  • Shoo Out the Clowns: Hook Foot, who has mostly been used as a comic relief character, is sent off on a caravan a few episodes before the dramatic season finale.
  • Shout-Out: The title "The Brothers Hook" is one to The Brothers Grimm.
  • Tempting Fate: After meeting his brother, Hook Foot says he's glad they're going separate ways but Hook Hand offers him and the other main characters a ride since they're going the same way.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Ever since he became famous, Hook Hand has not only gotten a big head, but his belittling view of Hook Foot's dancing dream, left unchecked, has grown worse to the point that he's blind to his own bullying.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: After Rapunzel gets him to see the light, Hook Hand becomes more supportive of Hook Foot, to the point he gives him a replacement for his broken foot-hook in order to win the dancing competition.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Rapunzel calls out Hook Hand for his treatment of Hook Foot. She reminds him that if it weren't for her and Eugene's support (the very support he keeps denying his own brother), Hook Hand would never have lived his dream, so he has no right to belittle Hook Foot's.
