Recap / Tangled: The Series S1E01 "What The Hair?!"

Go To

After having visions of Mother Gothel, Rapunzel and Cassandra venture out to see a young alchemist to try and find out what has happened to her hair.

Tropes in this episode:

  • Abuse Mistake: Eugene thought Varian kidnapped Rapunzel and it looked like he strapped her to a torture device.
  • Bait-and-Switch: With Varian mumbling importantly into his magnifying glass, you'd think he has something interesting to say about Rapunzel's hair. He doesn't.
Varian: Whoa, yes... This, this is... [chuckles] It's very... [grips the magnifying glass with both hands] ...long.

  • Bungling Inventor: Varian doesn't seem to know what he's doing half the time, and as a result, his inventions tend to fail and end up being destructive.
  • Cannot Keep a Secret: Eugene is terrible at keeping secrets, which is just one more reason why Cassandra doesn't want Rapunzel to share the details of how her hair grew back. Rapunzel ends up telling him, and he promises not to reveal it.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Rapunzel's hair now being Nigh-Invulnerable saves her and Eugene when Varian's house falls on them.
  • Death Glare: Rapunzel and Maximus give identical ones to Eugene when he starts to gloat about how busted Cassandra is once people find out she sneaked out the princess at night. Maximus also whacks Eugene with his tail.
  • Didn't Think This Through: It's something that Eugene has to point out: while Varian means well with wanting to deliver running water to the village, the tremors that the heater causes are downright dangerous.

  • Discard and Draw: Rapunzel's new hair no longer has the ability to magically heal, and it's traded for indestructibility. That's a bit of good news, because not having her magic healing means no one can use her again.
  • Expecting Someone Taller: Rapunzel was told Varian can be dangerous, and assumes he's going to be some tall figure, but it turns out he's a kid.
  • I Am Not Spock: Invoked. Varian confuses the adventures of Eugene with the "Flynn Rider" from the book series.
  • The Knights Who Say "Squee!": Varian reacts this way on seeing "Flynn Rider," revealing that he's kept a Stalker Shrine. Eugene tries to correct him but is nonetheless flattered that someone idolized his old persona.
  • Man Behind The Curtain: Non-villainous example. Varian is built up and said to be a wizard who is dangerous and intimidating and wore a mask to give him that appearance, but much to Rapunzel's disappointment, he's just a whiz-kid who happens to be an alchemist. However, he turns out to be a nut-job who doesn't seem to know what he's doing, so in a way, he is dangerous.

  • Oh, No... Not Again!: Varian's father reacts this way when he realizes that Varian's invention has endangered the village and his son again.
  • Pun-Based Title: What the h... hair?
  • Put on a Bus: Hook Hand went on tour, so we meet his brother, Hook Foot.
  • Running Gag: A raccoon keeps stealing the apples that Maximus wants. By the end of the episode, Max freezes it in Varian's goo after being taunted all episode.
  • Secret-Keeper: Eugene finally learns how Rapunzel's hair has grown back.
  • Series Goal: This episode begins the Story Arc where Rapunzel tries to solve the mystery of her hair growing back.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Varian's inventions tend to fail because he has little to no safety procedures, apart from the solvent for the sticky goo that is meant to trap raccoons. He doesn't seem to realize this.
  • The Unreveal: The test results for Rapunzel’s Hair Reboot were lost in the wreckage, leaving no answers and the mystery will have to be solved another day.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Varian wants to please his father, but his father also thinks that his inventions are destructive. Lampshaded when Varian says that if he got the water heater to work, then his dad might be So Proud of You following the Anger Born of Worry.
  • Wham Shot:
    • Varian's hand is still injured after Rapunzel sings the healing song. This means the hair has lost that power.
    • Varian showing Eugene the giant water heater, which is causing the tremors in the village.
    • The spikes growing just outside the kingdom walls.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Pete the guard has a fear of mimes. Cue Ulf the mime sneaking up behind him.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain:
    • Rapunzel thinks she has found someone who can figure out why her hair has grown back, and how it's changed. Varian may have the device to test her hair, but Varian's device breaks before the parchment can print the results. Her hair will thus remain a mystery for now.
    • Subverted with Eugene, when the one time someone trusts him with a secret turns out to hide a dangerous one. Rapunzel tells him how her hair grew back, and he promises to keep his mouth shut.
