Recap / Tales From The Darkside S 1 E 17 The Madness Room

Go To

Edward Osbourne and his wife Cathy invite their attorney Michael Fox to finalize Edward's will. Through a Ouija board, a spirit named Ben tells the trio that their large house contains a walled-off room that has been rumored to make any person who enters it violently insane. As Cathy and Michael are lovers, they plan to use the room to scare Edward to death so they can steal his fortune.

"Madness Room" provides examples of:

  • Bittersweet Ending: Leaning more towards bitter than sweet. Cathy, Michael and Edward all die in the fire, and no one but Ben will ever know what happened. But this isn't an entirely bad thing, as Cathy and Michael won't be able to get their hands on Edward's money, and Ben has made them pay for their greed and treachery.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Edward's sensitive heart and his need to take medication implies that he's very susceptible to too much excitement.
  • Gold Digger: Cathy, who's been having an affair with Michael, and is willing to kill Edward so she can take his money.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Ben's interference with Cathy and Michael's plan includes tricking Edward into dropping the only key out of the room into a crack in the floor. As a result, when the fire starts, all three are unable to escape and ultimately burn to death.
  • Real After All: Ben's existence, at first, seems like a part of Cathy and Michael's plot to scare him to death. By the end of the episode, as all three of them burn to death, Ben's laughter can be heard, implying that he actually was behind the whole thing.
  • Room Full of Crazy: The Madness Room itself. It's hinted that anyone who stays in it for too long becomes murderously insane. In actuality, the madness itself is just an act, and Cathy had the room added to the house herself while Edward was in the hospital.
  • Sanity Slippage: The Madness Room induces it in anyone who stays inside too long. Of course, it's all a plan by Cathy and Michael.
