Recap / TPF: Louder and Prouder S1 E4 "Father Figures"

Go To

Maya and KG are being bullied by their classmates for having two dads due to Dijonay outing them to everyone via Hologram.

Tropes:

  • Artistic License – Law: Randall denies Oscar a loan because of a personal grievance without giving a real reason. As much as Oscar deserves it for being bigoted, that's still illegal.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: Michael can’t recall a time he or the others treated LaCienega poorly, that is until she mentions when he made fun of her for her big, long feet.
  • Call-Back: LaCienega brings up the time when the gang made fun of her for having big feet (even the flashback uses the footage of the original show). And we see she still somewhat holds it against Michael for instigating it.
  • Character Development: Oscar starts the episode strongly opposing Barry and Randall's marriage out of homophobia, but after a firm chewing out by his entire family and some other karmic shenanigans, he comes around to being accepting of their relationship and makes peace with them.
  • Chilly Reception: After using the "life isn't fair" excuse, the family alienates Oscar and treat him with a certain tolerance.
  • Dance Party Ending: Not counting the "one week later" stinger, the episode ends with everyone at Barry and Randall's house dancing to "September" by Earth, Wind & Fire.
  • Darker and Edgier: Out of any episode that deals with bullying, this one is rather raw. As Penny points out, LaCienega being made fun of for her big feet is peanuts compared to what Maya and KG are going through, which is harassment at a psychologically damaging level. In fact, this is the first episode in Disney Animation that directly deals with LGBTQ+ and related prejudice and play it seriously, and it’s a reality that has almost never been seen in other animated shows featuring LGBTQ+ characters.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Maya appreciates Penny's efforts to stand up for her enough to invite her family over for gumbo.
  • Dramatically Missing the Point: When Penny explains Maya and KG's problems to her father, Oscar tells Penny that she has learned a valuable lesson that life isn't fair in a manner that would almost be comical if not for the legitimate seriousness of Maya and KG's situation. This statement earns him a well-deserved frown from the family and prompts Penny to say, "I can't stand him."
  • Even Evil Has Standards: The Gross Sisters, of all people, don't bully Maya and KG just because they have two dads. They'll bully them because having two dads who earn a lot of money means they can get more money from them. It's kind of telling when the neighborhood bullies are more open-minded than most of their classmates and their parents.
  • Even the Dog Is Ashamed: Puff is just as mad at Oscar for his homophobia as the rest of the family. No one objects to the dog attacking him when he still doesn’t back down.
  • Flashback with the Other Darrin: The scene from "Love Thy Neighbor" of the original series, where Michael says "Hey everybody, it's flipper" is shown. But it's re-recorded to have EJ Johnson voice him instead of Phil LaMarr.
  • Freudian Excuse: Some of Maya's standoffish behavior is explained here as due to being the adopted daughter of two dads. The former because she doesn't even know her birth parents, the latter because people pick on her for having gay parents, and it’s implied to have happened at least once before.
  • Gossipy Hens: Dijonay is at her worst here, as it’s her fault that Maya and KG were bullied for having two dads. She even gossips about Oscar losing his bank loan and the two dads serving gumbo.
  • Impairment Shot: Not a literal impairment, but seeing Barry and Randall kiss makes Oscar's eyeballs crack like glass, and sees everything as if through a broken lens. Once he gets over his bigoted attitude, his eyes return to normal.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Penny tries to cheer up Maya by joking about how the rest of the school is supposedly jealous of Maya and KG for having two dads, whereas some of them don't have moms or dads. This however falls through as Maya walks off and KG calls out Penny for this trope, stating that they're adopted and that it is a sensitive topic for Maya, and Penny didn’t know that.
  • Instant Costume Change: Upon seeing that a brother (Randall) is in charge of approving his loan, Oscar quickly changes to a dashiki to curry his favor.
  • Jaw Drop: Oscar drops his jaw twice in a row. First, when he sees Sunset in a sexy evening gown, and then when he meets Barry and sees how handsome he is.
  • Jerkass Ball: More like "Bigot Ball" in this case, but despite being friends with the gay Michael, LaCienega and Dijonay suddenly become hostile towards Maya and KG for their dads. Even Zoey, who is typically the nicest of the bunch, decides to be a fence-sitter on the whole thing because she is running for class president.
  • Karma Houdini: Dijonay gets no comeuppance for spreading rumors through the episode. Penny does confront her, but since the damage has already been done, it's hardly a real comeuppance.
  • Karmic Shunning: The rest of the family rightfully shuns Oscar due to his homophobic behavior towards Maya and Miguel's two dads. To Oscar's credit, he did apologize for his actions at the end.
  • Kick the Dog: Dijonay is the one who spread the (true) rumor about Maya and KG having two dads. The issue wasn't so much that she personally has a problem with them having two dads as it is more that Dijonay just went into their personal business for her own gain.
  • Kissing Discretion Shot: Played straight with Barry and Randal's kiss the first time and averted the second time around. This is mostly likely a case of Disney's Standards and Practices.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Oscar's Butt-Monkey status is amped up in this episode. It's well deserved because of how badly he treated Felix in the beginning and his ignorance towards the idea of having parents of the same sex (it also helps that he didn't want to stop being ignorant about it). Even after he comes around to accepting Maya and KG's two dads, the karma gods still go after him for creating Snackland, which turns out to be a toxic waste dump. Prouds leave Oscar to sink in quicksand and his head is chewed on by a six-eyed fish.
  • Life Isn't Fair: Oscar tries to use this line to justify the bullying that Maya and KG go through, but the rest of the family rightfully don’t buy the excuse.
  • Mama Bear: Trudy openly states she won't let Oscar try to use his outdated thinking to influence Penny, joined by Suga Mama openly lambasting Oscar's behavior when he tells Penny he doesn't want her hanging around Maya and KG. Not only are the Proud women disgusted by Oscar's homophobia, they actively refuse to let it rub off on Penny.
  • Moment Killer: After Michael enthusiastically agrees to go with Penny to support Maya and KG, Penny thanks Michael in a very sappy manner, killing his excitement and leading him to drag Penny to the table.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: Pink-I is a parody of Billie Eilish.
  • Not Quite the Right Thing: Penny chooses to sit with Maya and KG after everyone shuns them for having two dads, but blows it when she cracks a joke about not having parents because they're both adopted. In any case, laughter isn’t really the best medicine to cheer up someone who is bullied for something far more traumatizing than say, LaCienega having large feet. Later, she confronts the Gross sisters for trying to shake Maya down for money, though she wrongfully mistook it for bullying over their two dads. Maya, at least appreciates this gesture enough to invite Penny's family over for gumbo.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: LaCienega still isn't exactly happy that Michael made fun of her big feet.
  • Politically Incorrect Hero: Oscar is not pleased that Barry and Randall are gay. Despite this, he accepts Michael whom he knows is gay only because he can trust he can't make a move on Penny, showing Oscar's tolerance is selective.
  • Retraux Flashback: LaCienega’s flashback to when people saw her big feet is a clip taken directly from the original series episode “Love Thy Neighbor”.
  • Soapbox Sadie: Though she has a legitimate cause, Penny's enthusiasm to support Maya and KG becomes comical when she gets worked up into long-winded, sappy speeches. At one point she's given an actual plastic crate to speechify from. She's explicitly compared to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Megan Rapinoe, and Ilhan Omar.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Suga Mama gleefully points out how stupid Oscar is when he vocally doubles down on his homophobic viewpoint despite literally everyone in his family being disgusted with him, earning him a mauling from Puff.
Suga Mama: You just dumb son.
  • Women Are Wiser: In contrast to Oscar, Trudy and Suga Mama have no issue or comment on Maya and KG having two dads.
