Recap / Sword Art Online II Ep 4 GGO

Go To

Upon logging into Gun Gale Online, Kirito notices something odd about his avatar: with a slender build and long black hair, he now appeared very feminine. Although his in-game gender was still male, his avatar attracted attention from both people with newfound crushes on him and those hoping to buy his avatar, which seemed to be very rare and highly sought after.

Hopelessly lost in GGO's hub city, he manages to get help from another player, Sinon, who mistakes Kirito for another woman and is also on her way to register for the "Bullet of Bullets" tournament. Before that, however, she suggests Kirito get some better gear than "her" default armor and weapons. With only a thousand credits to his name, and not wanting to borrow money from Sinon, Kirito decides to try his luck at a casino. One game, in particular, catches his eye: "Untouchable!", where the goal is to evade a robotic cowboy's gunfire and reach the jackpot, which now amounted to 302,000 credits.

After watching another hapless player try and fail, Kirito gets a feel for one of the game's features, "prediction lines": outside of sniper rifles before they are fired, most guns in GGO give off beams of light that warn players where bullets will travel before they are fired, giving them a chance to take evasive action. The closer the players got to the jackpot, the more quickly the cowboy would fire, and less time the player would have to react. When Kirito takes his turn, the lightning-fast reflexes he honed in SAO and ALO allow him to evade the cowboy easily and make it to the jackpot, winning over 300,000 credits at once.

With a sizeable budget to work with, Kirito starts shopping for gear. None of the weapons really catch Kirito's attention, except for one: the Kagemitsu G4 Photon Sword. Even though photon swords are unpopular due to their fast energy consumption and suicidally short range, Kirito gladly puts down half of his available funds to buy it and immediately feels right at home with a sword in his hand. With Sinon's advice, he also purchases a pistol for a sidearm, along with some armor.

Afterwards, Sinon takes Kirito to a firing range so that he can get a feel for how to use guns in the game. When aiming with a gun, a "Bullet Circle" appears which shows the general area over which the bullet would travel. Players can improve their accuracy by either getting close to their target, or by calming down, since Bullet Circles grow when a player's heart rate increases and shrink when it decreases. Either way, though, Kirito has a hard time using guns.

All the time they spent shopping and practicing, however, leaves them with only ten minutes to register for the tournament before registration closes. Kirito finds a buggy, rents it, and roars down the road upon it, leaving Sinon surprised as she rode with him: most players can't drive buggies as well as him. Kirito claims to play racing games (even though he rides a motorcycle in the real world) as he races down the highway.
