Recap / Superstore S 4 E 05 Delivery Day

Go To

Delivery Day is the fifth episode of Superstore's fourth season.

Dina and Glenn are going to the hospital to induce labor, because their baby is a week late. Only seconds later however, Amy goes into labor, so they take her to the hospital with them. While there, Amy is sent to a nearby clinic, because the hospital doesn't take her insurance (Dina is covered under Glenn's insurance because managers have a better plan).

Amy and Jonah spend much of the episode trying to figure out their relationship dynamic, whether or not Jonah should be there since they haven't been dating long and he isn't the father. Jonah decides to pay for the hospital (with Amy insisting on paying him back), but then the hospital administrator reveals there are a lot more expenses than just the room, so they head back to the clinic. Eventually, Adam shows up just in time for the birth, and Jonah leaves shortly after.

At the nice hospital, a hot doctor checks on them and Dina insists he do the delivery. Glenn and Jerusha agree, because they want to make everything as comfortable as possible for Dina. The doctors tell them that there's a complication, and they need to do a C-section. Glenn is uncomfortable with going into the operating room, but Dina, who seems to be afraid, asks that he and Jerusha be there for support.

Meanwhile, back at the store, Garrett is trying to come up with something to write on Amy and Glenn's cards. After failing to come up with a funny, witty comment, he enlists the rest of the store. When he and Mateo visit Amy and Dina, he is visibly frustrated with the outcome.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Damned by Faint Praise:
Amy: The clinic is good, right?
Hospital Employee: ...It's been there for years.
  • Hospital Hottie: Dina is attracted to the doctor who comes in to check on her. Even Jerusha remarks that he's attractive. Later, another hot doctor comes in to help with the epidural.
Dina: Damn, what is this place? It's like Grey's Anatomy!
  • I Need to Go Iron My Dog: Jonah comes up with a flimsy excuse to leave after Amy has her baby: "I have a party — a meeting — I have a party meeting."
  • Instant Birth: Just Add Labor!: Justified for Dina, who's inducing labor and having a c-section, but Amy's natural labor is surprisingly short.
  • Not So Above It All: Dina tends to act fearless and emotionless, but seems to express fear over the thought of a c-section.
  • Oh, Crap!: Jonah and Amy, when they look at how bad the clinic is.
  • Skewed Priorities: So, so many in this episode.
    • Amy and Jonah discussing their relationship dynamic while she's giving birth.
    • Dina wanting to look sexy for her doctor while she's in the hospital about to give birth.
    • Jonah wanting to discuss healthcare inequality when they arrive at the clinic.
    • Garrett focusing on what to write on their cards instead of his job.
  • Vomit Discretion Shot: It's implied Glenn vomited due to seeing Dina's blood, as after Dina's baby is born, we see something dripping behind his surgical mask.
