Tropes

  • The Anti-Nihilist: After spending the earlier part of the season despairing that nothing they've done matters because of Chuck's manipulations, Dean has come around to realizing that every life they save is important.
Lee: Why do you care so much Dean?
    Dean: Because someone has to.
  • Bar Brawl: Dean and Lee pick a fight with some drunks bothering Sally, ending with tossing them out of the window. Later, the two of them fight each other, wrecking the bar in the process.
  • Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: Cemented with Sergei, who makes Sam's predicament worse and essentially takes him hostage in exchange for the Key to Death. Unfortunately for him, Castiel has learned from his previous mistake and turns the table on him, having Bobby take Sergei's niece hostage in turn.
  • Combat Breakdown: Dean's fight with Lee involves them shooting up the latter's bar with a revolver and a shotgun, then moving on to fisticuffs and hitting each other with stools when they run out of bullets.
  • Mythology Gag: Lee quips to Dean that "you can't just sit around lip-synching 'Eye of the Tiger' when no one's watching." This is a reference to the outtake from "Yellow Fever" where Jensen Ackles lip-synches Eye of the Tiger.
  • Decapitation Presentation: Dean rolls the Marid's head through the door as a way to announce that he lived and is coming for Lee.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: The Marid is decapitated offscreen by Dean, with him killing Lee being the actual end to his hunt.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Sergei gives up and decides to cure Sam for real when Castiel reveals that he has ordered Bobby to take his niece hostage.
  • Evil All Along: Lee Webb is the culprit for the murder of Angela Sullivan, having sacrificed her alongside countless others to the marid in exchange for health and wealth.
  • Evil Former Friend: Dean and Lee were good friends when they were both young hunters, but Lee was fatally changed by his last case.
  • Graceful Loser: After failing to gain the Key to Death, Sergei’s final remark to Castiel is casually complimenting him on his ruthlessness before leaving.
  • The Hedonist: Lee became this after a case in Arizona years ago, which convinced him that fighting against evil is hopeless and all the hunters like himself should do is to please themselves as much as they can.
  • Internal Reveal: Castiel finds out that Chuck has resurrected Lilith.
  • Moment Killer: Castiel's arrival at the bunker looks to interrupt something between Sam and Eileen.
  • Remember the New Guy?: This episode introduces Lee, an old hunter friend of Dean. We never saw him in earlier episodes. Somewhat justified, as his comments imply he quit hunting sometime when Sam was still in college.
  • That Came Out Wrong: When Castiel tries to explain about Sam's bullet wound.
Castiel: There may be some of you inside Chuck.
    Eileen: Eww!
  • Two Lines, No Waiting: One half of the episode deals with Dean solving the marid case on his own. The other deals with Castiel's attempt to reach Chuck through Sam.
  • Waxing Lyrical: Sally tells Dean that her friend Angela was "a good girl, loves Jesus." Lee pipes up "and America too".
