Recap / Supernanny USS 1 EP 4

Go To

The fourth episode of the first season of the US version of Supernanny.

Jo visits Bailey, Colorado, where she meets John and Melora Wischmeyer. John and Melora have three children; nine-year-old Jared and four-year-old twins Ashlyn and Alaia. Ashlyn and Alia do everything in their power to control their parents and their older brother, such as running through the house, screaming, and ignoring Melora's attempts to discipline them. Can Jo help John, Melora and Jared keep the twins under control?

This episode provides examples of:

  • Abusive Offspring: Among the things Ashlyn and Alaia do to their parents are kick, bite, and slap them in the face. Alaia can even be heard on the submission reel (presumably) telling Melora "I'll give you something to cry about".
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: Alaia and Ashlyn are this to Jared, because they know Melora won't punish them (but she'll definitely blame him) for their awful behavior.
  • Big "SHUT UP!": Jared says this to Alaia when she won't stop calling him a Fool and a Stinky Butt. This gets the attention of Malora, who sends him to his bedroom as punishment.
  • Big Stupid Doo Doo Head: Alaia calls both her mother and Jared "Stinky Butt", the latter prompting Jared to give her a Big "SHUT UP!" in response. During the Family Test Run, with the bedtime techniques being done poorly, Ashlyn insults her parents with "butt-pie".
  • Company Cross References: Several Disney VHS tapes can be seen on the rack near Ashlyn and Alaia's bedroom. ABC, which aired Supernanny in the US, is owned by Disney.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Jared is the responsible sibling to Ashlyn and Alaia's foolish siblings. Jared is more mature and level-headed than the girls and only lashes out at them if they continually mistreat him and nothing is being done about it. Ashlyn and Alaia spend most of their time bothering their parents and their older brother and don't listen to any of them.
  • Go to Your Room!: Melora sends Jared to his bedroom as punishment for telling Alaia to shut up, which he only did since Alaia kept calling him a Fool and a Stinky Butt. Jo finds this unfair because Alaia and Ashlyn are far more badly behaved than Jared.
  • Manly Tears: Alaia's temper tantrum when she's first sent to the Naughty Corner is so extreme that John (tasked with the discipline at Jo's instruction) ends up getting teary-eyed. John even notes that up to that point, he hadn't done so in ten years.
  • Mocking Sing-Song: During the beginning of the observation, Alaia taunts Melora while the latter is working by singing "Na-na-na-na-boo-boo!". She and Ashlyn both later do this to annoy their parents when they should be ready for bedtime.
  • The Unfavorite: Jared is both ignored because of and blamed for Ashlyn and Alaia's bad behavior despite being more mature and level-headed than them. The twins also regularly psychologically wear him down to the point of tears. When Jo talks to him after Melora unfairly punishes him, she comes to the conclusion that he has given up trying to voice how he feels because he knows that the results will not end in his favor.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: When Jared tells Alaia to shut up for calling him a Fool and a Stinky Butt, Melora overhears. Alaia tells Melora that Jared keeps telling her to shut up, even though he only said it once because she wouldn't stop bothering him and Melora wouldn't do anything to stop Alaia.
