Recap / Supermarioglicthy4s Super Mario 64 Bloopers The Pursuit Of Happiness

Go To

Mario and his friends decided to go on a visit to Meggy's, only to find out she is having trouble finding what she is good at...

  • And Then What?: It turns out Meggy's never asked herself what she'd do after finally winning Splatfest. This leads to her doing various odd jobs.
  • Damned By a Fool's Praise: Inverted. Meggy, in a funk after winning the final Splatfest and having no more purpose in life is reluctant to even try finding a new job as she feels Splatfest is all she was ever good at. Then when Bob says that jobs are overrated that she begs the others to help her find a job.
  • Desperately Seeking A Purpose In Life: Meggy's been trying (and failing) to find herself a new role ever since Meggy's Destiny: An SMG4 Movie. It's finally come to a head here.
  • Elephant in the Living Room: Meggy's personal life and her dissatisfaction with her lack of stability is the uncomfortable subject being addressed here.
  • Enemy Within: The black entity only exists in Meggy's mind as an antagonistic force, as shown in this episode.
  • Innocuously Important Episode: Not the episode as a whole, who's importance is front and centre, but the segment where Meggy encounters the Hobos is just a part of the montage in the episode itself but they would go on to be a big part of the Genesis Arc.
  • Lethal Chef: Meggy's status as this is brought up once again. Mario and Luigi are afraid of her turning on a stove, to the point that Mario leaves said stove in a wide open field and hides in a bunker while Luigi delivers the food with a stick. The latter still ends up freaking out and trying to give the food away before driving away, hitting a tree, and catching on fire. All while Meggy uses the stove properly.
  • New Job as the Plot Demands: Played for Drama, if not outright Deconstructed. Meggy's lack of satisfaction in finding something she's good at has left her frustrated and on the verge of an emotional breakdown.
  • Put on a Bus: The end result of the episode is that Meggy's going on vacation to figure her life out, setting up her role in Sunset Paradise.
  • The Reveal: The true nature of the black entity watching Meggy last episode is revealed to be something called Shadow Meggy that's haunting her head.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Meggy, back when she was an Inkling and prior to meeting Mario and the rest of the Glitchy Gang, only really focused on competing in and winning the Splatfest. Even when she was turned into a human at the end of the Anime Arc, she never really wanted to do anything else. However, she never stopped and asked herself what she'd do after winning, and with Splatfest being cancelled due to lack of budget, she's been left directionless looking for various jobs in the Mushroom Kingdom since Inkopolis no longer has a place for her thanks to being inherently racist against non-resident species such as humans. This lack of a stable job and purpose has left her frustrated and even lashing out at her friends, something she regrets. Luckily for her, they're perfectly understanding, thus preventing Meggy from becoming the next Arc Villain.
  • Shadow Archetype: The black entity from the previous episode represents Meggy's negative thoughts and feelings.
  • Shout-Out: A lot this time.
    • During the "cooking" segment of the episode, Meggy reenacts the opening to the part including the opening song BLOODY STREAM from Jo Jos Bizarre Adventure Battle Tendency.
    • During the "cooking" segment of the episode, Mario briefly sings a parody to "I'll Make a Man Out of You" from 1998's animated Mulan.
    • The hobos say that "Four" is their god, and since the 4 on their banners are blue, it can be a reference to the character from Battle for BFDI, and to a lesser extent, "X Finds Out His Value".
    • Shadow Meggy. Given Shadow Meggy's speech, she seems akin to the Shadow Selves of Persona 4, repressed negative thoughts by their real-life counterparts. note
