Go To

Original airdate: November 30, 1991

Hip and Hop go to Dome City's school against King Koopa's wishes.

Tropes:

  • Apple for Teacher: Yoshi and Oogtar give Princess Toadstool an apple with a caterpillar inside. The two think it's funny (and so do Hip and Hop upon seeing it), but the princess doesn't.
  • Anti-Education Mama: A male example with King Koopa. His twin sons, Hip and Hop, are interested in going to school upon seeing pranks that Yoshi and Oogtar have pulled on Princess Toadstool, and they want to be able to prank them. Koopa does not approve of the idea of Hip and Hop going to school, as he doesn't want them to learn good citizenship and prefers for them to grow up to be sneaky, two-faced cheating illiterates like him.
  • Answer Cut: Hip wonders what happened to his backpack. Cut to Yoshi burping.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: Hip and Hop hide a Piranha Plant in Oogtar's eggplant/rutabaga crossbreed which becomes huge after Oogtar and Yoshi unknowingly give it fertilizer.
  • Big Ball of Violence: Hip, Hop, Yoshi and Oogtar get into one during recess.
  • Covered in Gunge: Hip falls face-first into his volcano with a splat after Yoshi lifts the stool on which he's standing.
  • Dude, Not Funny!: Princess Toadstool gives Oogtar an earful after she nearly eats a caterpillar in the apple he gave her.
  • Everyone Has Standards: During the "Rocking the High School" sequence, Yoshi and Oogtar see the giant piranha plant chasing Hip, Hop and King Koopa and point as if to say, "Hey, look out!"
  • Eye Pop: Hip after lava blasts out of his volcano. In one frame, his pupils fly outside of his eyes.
  • Fantastic Racism: The cave parents protest Hip and Hop going to school, though they relent when Mario and Princess Toadstool asks them to give the Koopas a chance.
  • Funny Background Event: After Hip's volcano explodes, a cave person jumps toward the ceiling, going airborne while the everybody else dashes for the exit.
  • Heel–Face Revolving Door: Hip and Hop attend school, seemingly with good intentions. However, they soon turn out to be Devils in Plain Sight who throw fireballs at the other children. They try to impress Dome City with their volcano science fair project, only for King Koopa to destroy the school by making it gush out lava.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Oogtar rushes to Yoshi's aid when Hip and Hop charge him for eating their backpacks.
  • Lying Finger Cross: Hip and Hop cross their fingers while promising Koopa they won't attend school.
  • Running on the Spot: Deconstructed. While being chased by the giant Piranha Plant, King Koopa, Hip and Hop do this and the plant swallows them whole.
  • Science Fair: Dome City's school has one with the Mario Bros. as judges.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Everyone (except Hip for some reason) runs out of the school after Hip's volcano project gets out of control. Hip escapes through a window a few seconds later.
  • Swallowed Whole: During the chaos at the science fair, the giant Piranha Plant swallows Hip, Hop and King Koopa which is then swallowed whole by Yoshi.
  • Tempting Fate: Hip says, "You can never predict when exactly a volcano is going to erupt!" Then, his volcano project erupts to kingdom come.
  • Uncertain Doom: King Koopa remains trapped on his bed while the castle is flooded with lava, with no possible escape route in sight. This was his last appearance in the Super Mario Bros. cartoons as a whole, with Mama Luigi being a Whole Episode Flashback. Has King Koopa been defeated for good?
  • The Voiceless: Luigi. Aside from screaming during the "Rockin' the High School" sequence, this is the only episode of any DiC cartoon where he doesn't have any lines.
