Recap / Summer Camp Island S 2 E 5 I Heart Heartforde

Go To

Oscar, Hedgehog, and the other campers are excited to take a trip to the non-magical town of Heartforde.

Tropes:

  • Balloon Belly: Oscar, Hedgehog and the baker get bloated after the pie-eating contest. Once they get stomach medicine from the doctor, they shrink back to normal.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Oscar and Hedgehog took so long just to get Oscar's toothpaste that they don't have time to get any of the other items they wanted to get. However, the Heartfordians they helped along the way are so grateful they give them a gift basket that just happens to have all the stuff on their wish lists.
  • Bookcase Passage: The only way to Heartforde is through one in Susie's basement, much to her annoyance.
  • Breather Episode: Somewhat lighter in tone, with the main conflict being a Race Against the Clock and getting items on a shopping list; more mundane in tone than some episodes.
  • Chain of Deals: Oscar and Hedgehog have to go through one just to get one tube of toothpaste.
  • Crazy-Prepared: The doctor always carries his anti-gas medicine that reduces body size back to normal with him wherever he goes.
  • Expy: Heartforde is, in a sense, similar to Hogsmeade from Harry Potter; hidden and difficult to get into, but the non-magical setting and mundanity are where it differs.
  • Filler: This episode has no repercussions on later episodes and is gentler in tone, with more emphasis on fun, and it's more comedy-driven.
  • Hollywood New England: In esthetic, anyway; the town resembles a stereotypical Mid-Atlantic town square of the 1950s or 1960s and the jobs are all similar to this setting. However, despite being named Heartforde, it's not named for Hartford, Connecticut, but Hertford in England.
  • Inexplicably Identical Individuals: A guy Oscar and Hedgehog keep running into at different jobs turns out to be a bunch of identical people.
  • Motor Mouth: Oscar's talking tube of toothpaste is this and it's the reason why Oscar really wants to buy a non-magical tube.
  • Mundane Object Amazement: Heartforde is the only non-magical section of the island, and for that reason it's treated as a big tourist attraction, both by the native denizens and by the campers who want a break from all the magic.
  • Parody: Not to the franchise as a whole, but just one section of the Harry Potter franchise; Hogsmeade being off-limits to most residents of Hogwarts (except at weekends), although inverted in that everything is mundane, not magical like in Hogsmeade.
  • Standalone Episode: The whole episode is self-contained and a largely comedy-driven.
  • Status Quo Is God: Nothing that happens in this episode has any bearing on later episodes that is plot-relevant or continuity heavy, although some of the characters do return in cameos later on down the line.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: Paulette makes a bunch of typoes in her newspaper, including "poompkins". Later, when Oscar asks Ms. Pinch what kind of pies she made she says they're "poompkin" pies.
  • Temporary Bulk Change: Once the doctor has given them his anti-gas medicine, Oscar and Hedgehog return to normal size.
