Recap / Strike Witches 2 Ep 6 Higher Than The Sky

Go To

A giant 30 km tall Neuroi appears slowly headed towards Rome. Sakamoto locates the core at the very top, far above the operational range of the Striker Units. A plan is quickly put together using rockets and a multistage launch in order to propel a witch into space in order to destroy the core. Sanya is chosen for this task, but with so much magic power being used to keep her alive as well as destroy the Neuroi, she needs a second witch to put up a shield to protect her from attack. Miyafuji, who produces the biggest and most powerful shields in the squadron is chosen, but Juutilainen is determined to be the one to protect her love despite never having used a shield in combat before.

Tropes in this episode:

  • Batman Can Breathe in Space: Their magic allows the Witches to survive in space, although how exactly it works is never explained.
  • Call-Back: As with the Strike Witches episode "We're the Same", this episode focuses on Eila and Sanya.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: The Romagna Air Force engage the Neuroi in battle. Unfortunately for them, the Zara and Pola cruisers are destroyed seconds later.
  • Plot-Mandated Friendship Failure: Sanya has a brief falling-out with Eila after Yoshika is chosen to protect Sanya. Fortunately, they reconcile at the end of the episode.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: After re-entry, Eila and Sanya are able to see the Ural Mountains on the horizon. Eila suggests fleeing to the safety of Siberia where Sanya's family are living in exile. Sanya declines and wants to finish the job in Europe first.
  • Skinny Dipping: As a Call-Back to "We're the Same", Sanya goes for a nighttime swim in the nude. Seconds later, Hartmann joins her.
  • Space Is Noisy: Averted. Aside from the song playing on the soundtrack, it is absolutely silent during the period they are in space.
