Recap / Static Shock S 4 E 7 Now You See Him

Go To

"Weird" Eddie Felson, a boy that Virgil and Daisy went to science camp with over the summer, turns up to win Daisy’s heart, while also stealing things as a villain called Speedwarp using a device that allows him to move so fast that it looks like everything else is standing still.

Tropes for this episode include:

  • All of the Other Reindeer: Most of Eddie’s classmates picked on him, even the other nerds.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Deconstructed. Eddie Felson met Daisy Watkins at science summer camp. He developed a crush on her because she was the only person at the camp that was kind to him. However, his crush on her becomes an unhealthy obsession, with him stalking her and stealing luxury items to give to her. What made it worse was it was implied from Daisy's reaction to seeing him again and from the way she talked about him is that she did not like him even as a friend and whatever kindness she ever showed him was out of pity.
  • Blackmail: Speedwarp manages to find out Static and Gear's identities and threatens to go public with him if they don't stop coming after him. Luckily the events of the episode prevent him from spilling it.
  • Bully Magnet: Eddie was this in high school.
  • Death by Secret Identity: Somewhat. Speedwarp discovers Static and Gear's secret identities, which he uses to blackmail them to not interfere with his crimes or he'll reveal their true identities to the public. In the end, Speedwarp gets his abilities inverted, causing him to move and speak a snail's pace, thus preventing him from revealing anything.
  • Deducing the Secret Identity: After Speedwarp unmasks Gear and recognizes him as Richie Foley, he deduces that Static is Virgil Hawkins due the fact the former is best friends with the latter. Fortunately, Speedwarp's current condition at the end of the episode stops him from revealing their identities.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Eddie got the unflattering nickname, “Weird Eddie”, from the other kids.
  • Failed a Spot Check: At one point, Speedwarp, while moving at Super-Speed, takes off Gear’s helmet to learn his secret identity and then gives it to Static. Gear somehow doesn’t notice he’s no longer wearing his helmet until Static gives it back to him.
  • The Farmer and the Viper: Eddie's boss, upon learning he stole the Time Gauntlet, gives him the chance to do the right thing before he calls the cops on him, not only does Eddie refuse, he tries to murder his boss by trying to sabotage his plane. Luckily, Static and Gear manage to save him.
  • Gasp!: After a car gets wrecked, Gear gasps in shock when Static jokingly asks if that was Gear’s dad’s car.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Speedwrap sets up his own defeat when tries to remove Static's belt, that allows him to travel through Hyper-Time, which causes the two frequencies that were keeping the two in Hyper-Time to clash, leaving Eddie stuck moving in super-slow motion
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Eddie, who has abused the power of speed for the better part of the episode, ends up in his own time warp where he's slower than everything around him. It goes up to eleven when one bears in mind that what caused this to happen was Eddie stealing Static's own timewarp belt, despite Static's warning not to let the two timewarp devices get too close.
  • Mutually Unequal Relation: Implied. Eddie Felson met Daisy Watkins at science summer camp. She was the only person at the camp that was kind to him, so he developed a crush on her, which turned into an unhealthy obsession, with him stalking her and stealing luxury items to give to her. However, Daisy's reaction to meeting him again calls into question whether she was ever kind. While she does not hate him, Daisy was not happy to see Eddie again, and unhappy when she mentions she thinks she's seeing him again because he has a crush on her. And this was before she knew he was stalking her and stealing items to give to her. It should be noted that when Eddie revealed his powers to Daisy and mentions that she was the only one in camp that was kind to him, she did not deny that. However, it's possible she was only nice to him out of pity. Either way, it shows that Daisy does not truly like Eddie, and was glad he was defeated and out of her life for good.
  • Nerdy Bully: Virgil mentions Eddie was picked on by everyone, even the other nerds.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: When Eddie tries to kill his boss, after the latter learns he stole the Time Gauntlet and threatens to call the police on him, it causes Static and Gear to run into him when save his life and, with his help, create their own device that allows to travel in Hyper-Time.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: When Eddie’s boss learns he stole the Time Gauntlet, instead of calling the cops immediately, he calls Eddie and gives him an hour to call him back about returning it first, claiming he doesn’t want Eddie to get in trouble. Eddie then tries to kill him so he won’t ray him out.
  • Rule of Symbolism: Speedwarp slows down time so he can personally talk with Daisy and confess his feelings for her, symbolizing he wants to speed up their "relationship". Daisy says she just wants thing to go back to normal.
  • Stalker with a Crush: Eddie Felson to Daisy Watkins.
  • Status Quo Is God: Gear invents a belt for Static which will allow him to go into Bullet Time like Speedwarp. However, he warns Static that it can only be used once and claims it would take him a long time to build another one, so Static never uses it again after this episode.
  • Super-Speed: Speedwarp’s power. Static becomes super-fast, too, thanks to the belt Gear made, though he’s still not as fast as Speedwarp.
  • Time Stands Still: The Time Gauntlet makes Eddie so fast, everything else looks like it’s standing still. He can also bring other people up to the same speed. With help from Dr. McDonald, Gear invents a belt that will allow Static to go at the same speed just once.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Eddie’s boss calls him because he found out he stole the Time Gauntlet and gives him a chance to call him and return the gauntlet before telling the police, claiming that he doesn’t want Eddie to get in trouble. Eddie repays his kindness by trying to murder him to keep him quiet.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Speedwarp claims that before he stole the Time Gauntlet, he always did the right thing. Sadly, he quit doing the right thing because he says it never got him anything.
