Recap / Stargate SG-1 S1 E21 "Within The Serpents Grasp"

Go To

Remember how no one believed Daniel last episode?

Well, SG-1 takes matters into their own hands.

"Within the Serpent's Grasp" contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Agony Beam: Klorel uses the hand device on Daniel.
  • Apologetic Attacker: While Skaara was briefly in control, he could feel himself losing to Klorel's influence and asks O'Neill to forgive him for what he was about to do, after which Klorel manages to get his Jaffa in the room to apprehend O'Neill and Teal'c.
  • Blunt Metaphors Trauma:
Teal'c: I believe a medical attack could be successful.
    O'Neill: Surgical attack, Teal'c.
  • Do with Him as You Will: Apophis tells Klorel that he's free to kill O'Neill in whatever way he sees fit, though he does specify that Teal'c should die in the most painful way possible for a Jaffa.
  • Dramatic Irony: Hammond's grim observation in his final scene is that at least Daniel won't be here to witness the nightmare he saw in the other reality play out a second time here. Hammond of course is unaware that SG-1 is aboard one of the two incoming Goa'uld ships.
  • Dying as Yourself: Skaara briefly takes back control of his body before dying from gunshot wounds.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness:
    • It's stated that the windows on the mothership employ force shields as no transparent material could withstand the stress of travelling at hyperspeed, but later ship designs have glass windows more often than not. Possibly justified however in that over the series the hyperdrive tech clearly changed, causing them to be able to travel further and faster than previously. This ship, while with a new drive (as it would get to Earth much quicker than they anticipated) could have been an old design with a newer drive, and as newer ships are designed and built, the new hyper drive tech might not cause the same stresses as the old ones did.
    • The infamous 'three shots disintegrate' setting on the zat guns, which was eventually retconned away when the writers realized how ridiculous it was. Though it was only ridiculous if the three shots were applied over a period of time. They were essentially blasts of high electricity, three of them in quick succession causing things to disintegrate was, in theory at least, not out of the realms of plausibility.
  • Guns Akimbo: Daniel of all people, dual-wielding his Beretta and Carter's sidearm in the firefight with Klorel's Jaffa.
  • Hope Spot: For a brief moment it looks at though Klorel might be influenced by Skaara into letting the O'Neill and Teal'c go... and then it's revealed he just wants to make them watch as he destroys Earth.
  • "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight: O'Neill encourages Skaara to fight Klorel for control of his body.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Jack asks if he can get Showtime on the Goa'uld communication device. (This line was replaced in syndication with him going "mmmm, Goa'uld TV.")
  • Military Maverick: The entire team decides to disobey orders and make an illicit trip through the gate in an attempt to head off the coming invasion of Earth.
  • Oh, Crap!: Happens twice; first of all when the team realize that they're actually on a ship with no way of gating back home, and then later when the ships reach Earth a lot quicker than they anticipated.
  • Precision F-Strike:
Klorel: Nothing of the host survives.
    O'Neill: That's bullshit.
  • Sadistic Choice: O'Neill is forced to shoot Skaara to prevent Klorel from killing Daniel. Of course, it becomes irrelevant since Skaara and Klorel are revived in the next episode, but he had no way of knowing that would happen.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Klorel shows some shades of this with regards to Apophis, though he's also The Starscream.
  • Wham Shot: After assuming from Teal'c's information that it'd take the mothership months if not years to reach the Sol system from its starting point, Klorel takes Jack onto the bridge and shows him the view: Saturn and its rings.
