Star Trek Prodigy S 2 E 8 Is There In Beauty No Truth
(aka: Star Trek Prodigy S 2 E 8 Veritas)

Go To

Zero catches a telepathic message from a non-corporeal entity, inviting them to a planet.

Tropes:

  • Ambiguous Situation: Given that Dal and Zero can ride in its mouth without any difficulty, it's not clear how dangerous the Nazamon really is. It's possible the Running of the Nazamon gives the Ovidians the exhilaration of feeling like their lives are at risk without actually doing so.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • The protective eyewear for looking at Medusans reappears.
    • Other non-corporeal beings on Ovidia IV include the Calamarains and the Paxans.
  • Cross-Referenced Titles: The episode title is a reference to the original series episode, "Is There in Truth No Beauty?", which introduced the Medusans.
  • Expendable Clone: The Voyager bridge crew have no hesitation in turning off the holographic versions of the Prodigies, despite the fact that they were sapient enough to be indistinguishable from the originals. The Doctor, who is himself a hologram, doesn't object.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: The Doctor, when Holo-Dal brings up his holonovel and he starts eagerly talking about the plot... which reminds him that it involved a character making holo-duplicates of himself, and he suddenly realizes why the Prodigies have been acting strangely lately.
Doctor: I've been betrayed by my own brilliant storylines!
  • I Ate WHAT?!: Dal very much enjoys one of the drinks he's being served, until he's told it is the gastric juice from a creature.
  • I Choose to Stay: Part of the reason why the inhabitants of Ovidia IV chose to stay on the planet is because their new solid bodies would rot and decay if they left the planet. Zero themselves were also tempted but chose to be with their friends.
  • Meaningful Name: Ovidia is the family name of Publius Ovidius Naso, better known as Ovid, the writer of The Metamorphoses, an epic poem about "forms changed into new entities".
  • Non-Malicious Monster: While not made explicit in the episode, there are many hints that the Nazamon does not harbour any particular ill will towards the humanoids and may actually be only a peaceful grazer, interested only in the flowers, and only dangerous due to its enormous size. Dal and Zero can ride in its mouth without it trying to swallow them, and it does go not out of its way to try catching the humanoids.
  • Previously on…: Zero's Captain's Log recaps what happened last episode.
Personal log, stardate 61884.1. It's been a week since I've had a bit of an accident. The rest of the crew is steadfast in finding Chakotay and our lost Protostar. I suppose the timeline won't correct itself. They've attempted to fix my suit, but apparently, its intricate circuitry is melted beyond repair... and our small ship is short on parts. I fear I'm a burden, but I do what I can — keep watch one day, a funny quip the next.
  • Sense Freak: The dwellers of Ovidia IV, being all non-corporeal beings inhabiting a body, spend their time enjoying their new senses and emotions. Sadly for Zero, it also means enjoying fear of death.
  • Windows of the Soul: In their humanoid form, Zero's eyes have the same colour pattern as their non-corporeal form.

The Feast of Senses

After becoming corporeal Zero, who is usually made of pure energy, attends the "Feast of Senses" and revels in the new sensation.
