Penny Foolish

Original air date: 3/7/2008 (produced in 2007)

Mr. Krabs becomes obsessed when he thinks SpongeBob has found a penny.

"Penny Foolish" contains examples of:

  • An Aesop: You shouldn't obsess too much over something minor, it will make you do stupid things and might even damage your sanity.
  • All That Glitters: After spending the episode obsessing over a penny SpongeBob picked up, he finds out that the penny was actually a wad of chewed gum SpongeBob wanted for his collection. Subverted when it turns out to be a crumpled up $500 bill.
  • Broken Smile: Mr. Krabs has one when SpongeBob admits he would give him a penny if he had one.
  • Cassandra Truth: SpongeBob explains that he didn’t find any penny but the final scene shows that Mr. Krabs didn’t believe him.
  • Comically Missing the Point: After discovering Mr Krabs having broken into his house ransacking the place for his penny, Spongebob is mortified.....that he has left his metal detector unattended on the floor, and is not wearing metal detecting gloves.
  • Determinator: Mr. Krabs stops at nothing to get a single penny.
  • Foreshadowing: A crying SpongeBob admitting at Semi-Annual Charity Night he'd give Mr. Krabs a penny if he had one foreshadows the fact it wasn't a penny he picked up.
  • Greed: Mr. Krabs takes it to new heights here, becoming dangerously obsessed with a single penny.
  • Hallucinations: When starting to become obsessed, Mr. Krabs hallucinates anything round as pennies.
  • Here We Go Again!: Mr. Krabs is relieved when it turns out what SpongeBob found was what looked like dried up gum, but then he digs outside SpongeBob's yard to look for a penny.
  • No Ending: Mr. Krabs is still searching for a penny by episode's end.
  • Running Gag: When Mr. Krabs is seen from a distance, people hear dolphin chirps.
  • Sanity Slippage: Mr Krabs becomes increasingly unhinged on getting Spongebob's penny.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: Turns out, the "penny" SpongeBob collected was a wad of gum for his collection, which turns out to be a $500 bill.
  • Shake Someone, Objects Fall: Mr. Krabs does this to SpongeBob to find the penny. It ends up making his brain fall out of his head.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: SpongeBob calls Squidward beautiful when he sees him dressed up.
  • Tears of Remorse: SpongeBob is instantly brought to tears by Mr. Krab's pennyless story, and when he mentions donating a penny if he had one, he cries even harder.
  • Worthless Treasure Twist: Mr. Krabs spends the whole episode trying to find a penny Spongebob appears to pick up, only for Spongebob to reveal that he only found a piece of gum for his collection; subverted when the piece of gum turns put to be a wadded-up $500 bill.
  • Worthless Yellow Rocks: Upon finding out that the piece of chewed-up gum is actually a $500 bill, SpongeBob tosses it aside in disappointment.

Nautical Novice

Original air date: 3/29/2008 (produced in 2007)

SpongeBob memorizes the entire history of boating for a field trip to a boating museum.

"Nautical Novice" contains examples of:

  • Alliterative Title: Nautical Novice
  • Bait-and-Switch:
SpongeBob: And there is the starter mechanism! (appears to be pointing to the key to the boat, then points at the A/C) That, right there! "A/C". That stands for "Automatic Conditionata". And that's fancy-fancy talk for "let's get this party started, like, instantly!"
  • Brick Joke: SpongeBob points out that the museum gets taken out to port for maintenance once a year. At the end, it turns out that the boat was moving precisely for this reason.
  • Don't Touch It, You Idiot!: When SpongeBob notices that the headlights are still on, Mrs. Puff and the engineer both scream out, "Don't touch anything, you twit!"
  • Fun with Acronyms: SpongeBob spots the button which activates the ship's "A/C" (air conditioning), but humorously thought it meant "Automatic Conditionata".
  • Gross-Up Close-Up: Of SpongeBob's rugged face complete with sand oozing out of his eyes and Exhausted Eye Bags, as a result of reading all night until morning without one bit of sleep.
  • I Can't Believe I'm Saying This: "...but here's your driver's license."
  • Medium Blending: SpongeBob finds a live-action hot dog on the boat's control panel.
  • Plot Hole: SpongeBob studied the entire history of boating in one night... but somehow didn't know A/C stood for air conditioning.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: At the end it is revealed that an employee was tugging the boat, and SpongeBob was not controlling the boat.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The music that plays during the boat museum montage is the theme song from The Navy Lark.
    • The beginning of The History of All Boating Ever, "In the beginning, Neptune created the sail" is a parody of the beginning of The Bible, "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth."
    • SpongeBob makes a model of the H.M.S. Pinafore.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: After Mrs. Puff rips up SpongeBob's license, the engineer feels sorry for him and decides to reward SpongeBob for his bravery by giving him his Honorary Sea Legs.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: SpongeBob finally gets his license, only to get it ripped up upon learning the boat was being tugged by an engineer to Bikini Bottom for a checkup.
