Recap / Sonic Boom S 2 E 21 Mombot

Go To

At Eggman's lair, Eggman announces his latest invention, saying that he has accomplished something that no scientist has ever done. This machine that Eggman built creates a black hole. Orbot asks Eggman what he is going to do with it, and Eggman replies that he will use it on some broccoli and at the same time prove once and for all that he is the greatest scientist that ever lived. He presses the button, and the broccoli is sucked in. Orbot makes a sarcastic remark, and then crashes into something. Eggman, saying that depth preception is for losers, prepares to present this invention to the scientific community honored by his peers.

At the convention, Comedy Chimp comments on last-minute waiting to Stratford, and Eggman says that there is no way he can lose, and that he has the edge here. Sonic, Knuckles, Amy and Sticks witness a presentation of a project by Beth that she made solo. Sonic comments about the solar system, and Sticks says that there is no such thing as other planets. Beth questions Sticks's conspiracy by asking that if there are no planets, where did the aliens go? Sticks then makes a I-Got-My-Eyes-On-You gesture.

Eggman announces his particle theory, but Soar notices the potato clock. Orbot and Cubot talk about the potato clock and how it works. Eggman then looks at the other projects that the others made, and Comedy Chimp announces the beginning of the Science Fair Awards, and comments on Lady Walrus' dress. No one laughs. Comedy Chimp gives the first reward to Beth, and then gives out the compensation trophies to everyone else. Eggman asks how come he gets no trophy, and Tails tells Eggman that he is disqualified for exceeding the height limit for a children's competition. Comedy Chimp tells Beth that she also gets a week with observing the inventions of a great scientist, Tails. Eggman sighs in disappointment.

At Meh Burger, Orbot tries to cheer Eggman up by checking to see what Meh Meal Toy Eggman got, which is revealed to be a Councilman McMeh toy. Eggman angrily asks what nitwit thought that the design would be interesting, with the mayor watching on in the background. Lady Walrus then takes a picture of her and Stratford's compensation trophy, saying that her son picked the rock out by himself. Eggman gets annoyed by that; it's just a silly rock! Eggman wishes that he had something to give unconditional love like that. Orbot and Cubot hug Eggman, but Eggman pushes them away, but nevertheless decides that maybe a robot is the answer.

Back at his lair, Eggman enters some things on his computer with a lady-like robot beside the computer. He types in things that mothers do, like bedtime stories and lullabies, and then says into the microphone, "Add to database: 'Don't play ball in the house'. 'No more screen time'. And, 'If you keep making that face, it'll get stuck that way.'" He types this information, and then comments that his latest invention will praise his accomplishments, and Orbot and Cubot enter from the door on the left, just as Eggman activates his robot, a new robot called Mombot.

At Tails' workshop, Beth comments on Tails' science stuff, and Tails says that he has been working on some inventions, and rushes off to the right. He introduces the Hovercycle, a bike that does as the name says; hovers when the user starts pedaling. Tails starts pedaling, but eventually, the Hovercycle stops, and Tails falls to the ground, but nevertheless gets praise from Beth.

Back at Eggman's lair, Eggman places a sticker down on his Fuzzy Puppy sticker thing, and Mombot asks Eggman on what he would like to do next, and Eggman says that he would like ice cream, and then asks if they would go to the movies, go to the mall, or go to the Fuzzy Puppy store, and then declares a montage. The montage begins, with Eggman and Mombot having tea, Mombot placing a bandage on Eggman's injured knee, Mombot trimming Eggman's mustache, Mombot placing Eggman's blueprints, and as the music temporary pauses, Eggman plays the piano, and Mombot praises Eggman. The music starts back up again, as Mombot slices some steak and gives it to Eggman, and the montage ends.

Eggman presents to Orbot and Cubot a scarf that Mombot made for him, and announces that he is off to defeat Sonic. Mombot brings Eggman a lunch bucket and tells him not to trade his raisins for candy. Back at the workshop, Tails explains a microscope to Beth, but his laptop goes off; a sign that Eggman has launched an attack. Tails tells Beth to come with him. At the village, Sonic and his team are in the midst of fighting Eggman and his evil army of Motobugs, Crab Bots, and Scorpion Bots. The robots go down, while Tails tells Lady Walrus to keep an eye on Beth. The rest of the robots go down, and Eggman sends his Beetle Bots for backup. Those get defeated too, and Eggman admits that it did not go well, but at least he has Mombot to love him unconditionally, and then leaves. Tails tells Beth to come back to the workshop, but Beth praises Knuckles.

Back at the lair, Eggman tells Mombot of his defeat, and Mombot comments that villainy isn't Eggman's thing and suggests other things, but Eggman says that he is a super-villain, and Mombot says that she would be proud if Eggman was a real doctor, and Eggman growls. Mombot then suggests that Eggman makes peace with Sonic, and then calls Sonic to take Eggman to the movies. At Meh Burger, Sonic tells Tails about how Mombot told him to take Eggman to the movies. Tails suspects that it may be a trap, but Sonic says that he cannot say no when Mombot made Sonic a scarf. Tails says that Beth was supposed to be here, but she is with Knuckles right now. Sonic says that Beth is a smart kid who does not watch someone smash things forever. Meanwhile, Knuckles smashes a rock while Beth watches. Tails tries to tell Beth that he can demonstrate how metal conducts electricity, but Knuckles bends the metal bar. At the movies, something that is unmistakably Eggman's theme from the Sonic games of memories past plays in the background, and Eggman tries to blow Sonic up with a popcorn bomb. Sonic avoids the explosion, and Eggman tries to flee, but is stopped by Amy and Sticks.

After this turn of events, back at the lair, Eggman tells Mombot that Sonic beat him up, and Mombot declares that she will have to take things into her own hands. At the village, Tails and Knuckles decide to work together to impress Beth with a combination of science and strength with a coconut and baseball, with the coconut hitting someone in the process. Knuckles tries to hit it over the trees, but Tails misses the coconut, and Beth decides to listen to some music. Back at the lair, Sonic is impressed at the breakfast-for-dinner thing, and Mombot asks Amy if she and Sonic are friends. Mombot makes a sweater for Sticks. Eggman decides to defeat Sonic in front of Mombot to prove what a great villain he is. Cubot says that it's good to have something to fall back on. Just as Eggman presses on his controller to summon some Mantis Bots to attack, Mombot notices the Mantis Bots thanks to some eyes that Eggman installed on the back of Mombot. Mombot says that she spent all day planning this dinner, and Eggman ruined it, and whilst the Mantis Bots go back through the door, Mombot continues to scold Eggman. Eggman then gets slapped by Mombot and is sent to his room.

Beth is still listening to some music, but Sticks takes the headphones off, and proceeds to make conspiracies again. Tails and Knuckles find out that Beth has become friends with Sticks as the two walk off. Back at the lair, Eggman tells Mombot that if she can ground Eggman, then he will shut her off. Mombot asks Eggman if he got the email chain-letter that she forwarded to him, and Eggman decides to send Mombot on a cruise around the world. Mombot praises Eggman, and they hug. Eggman then asks the audience if it always has to end on a joke, and the episode ends.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Artificial Family Member: Eggman at one point acknowledges that he is technically Mombot's father for having created her.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall:
    • When Sonic talks to Tails about Mombot, he mentions the scarf that she made him, and hopes that the fans will like it more than the one he wears.
    • The episode ends with Eggman telling Mombot he's sending her on a cruise around the world, and her giving him a hug for such a thoughtful gift. Eggman then looks at the camera and says, "What? Does it always have to end on a joke?".
  • Brick Joke: When designing Mombot, one of the things Eggman programs her to say is, "If you keep making that face, it'll get stuck that way.". She says that same line later in the episode when Eggman pouts after she invites Sonic to a movie date with Eggman.
  • Call-Back: When Orbot and Cubot try to cheer Eggman up at Meh Burger, Eggman gets the same Councilman McMeh toy that Stratford got in "Knuck Knuck! Who's Here?".
  • Continuity Nod: One of the drawings Mombot hangs up on the fridge during her and Eggman's montage is the blueprint of the amusement park Eggman wanted to build in "Unnamed Episode".
  • Everyone Can See It: Mombot joins the many, many characters that wonders if there is something going on between Sonic and Amy.
  • Extra Eyes: When Eggman unleashes attack robots on Sonic, Amy, and Sticks, Mombot reveals that he programmed eyes in the back of her head.
  • Funny Background Event: As Eggman complains about Councilman McMeh, the mayor can be seen watching him in the background, who then backs off once Eggman says that McMeh is a bean-counting bureaucrat.
  • Gilligan Cut: Tails gets upset when Beth decides to hang out with Knuckles instead of him. Sonic tells him that Beth is a smart kid and won't want to watch Knuckles smash things forever. Cut to Knuckles smashing a boulder and Beth saying she could watch him smash things forever.
  • Girls With Mustaches: Eggman designed Mombot with a mustache.
  • Good-Times Montage: Shown with Eggman and Mombot in what the former calls a "Momtage".
  • Homemade Sweater from Hell: Mombot makes Sticks one of these, much to the latter's ire.
  • Kids' Meal Toy: An In-Universe example; Dr. Eggman gets a Councilman McMeh action figure in his Meh Meal.
  • Lady Looks Like a Dude: Beth keeps calling the female Sticks "Mister".
  • Lampshade Hanging:
    • When asked how he got so strong, Knuckles says he does upperbody exercises and only upperbody exercises.
    • Eggman pointing out to the audience that not every episode has to end on some joke.
  • Last-Minute Project: Stratford's science project is revealed to be a rock. Comedy Chimp, who is the judge, sees it and asks him if he waited until the last minute.
  • Manchild: Eggman enters a contest for children, sulks when he loses, and builds a mother figure to reassure him.
  • Mythology Gag: In the movie theater, Dr. Eggman's theme from Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Colors, and Sonic Runners plays.
  • Science Fair: Dr. Eggman enters one intended for children to show off his latest invention.
  • Ship Tease: Mombot asks Sonic and Amy if they're friends or something more, making the latter engage in Mirthless Laughter.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The score that Dr. Eggman plays on his piano is Ludwig Van Beethoven's "Für Elise".
    • Sonic's remark about the tossing of the solar system's dwarf planet is a reference to how Pluto was classified as a dwarf planet in 2006.
    • After Mombot says her son shouldn't be misbehaving, Eggman says he's her creator.
Eggman: [[Film/Chinatown I'm your father. I'm your son. Your father! Your son! Your father and your son!]] [gets slapped]
  • Stock "Yuck!": Dr. Eggman is implied to dislike broccoli in this episode, as he has built an invention that makes broccoli taste like applesauce, and has decided to start eating broccoli for this very reason.
  • Take That, Audience!: Sonic's remark about his fans' disdain with his scarf references the backlash the Sonic fanbase has demonstrated towards his redesign for the Sonic Boom franchise.
  • The Voiceless: Amy appears in this episode, but doesn't speak.
  • What You Are in the Dark: Eggman was fully prepared to erase Mombot for grounding him, but he found he just couldn't go through with it. He gets her a worldwide cruise instead.
  • You Must Be This Tall to Ride: Inverted; Eggman gets disqualified from the children's science fair because he exceeded the maximum height.
