Recap / Sofia The First S 3 E 03 Cedric Be Good

Go To

Cedric finally gets his hands on the Amulet of Avalor, but because he took it away from its chosen bearer without warning, it keeps cursing him with every bad deed he performs. Since his power-plucking potion is gone, he'll have to earn powers from the Amulet by doing good deeds, all while keeping Sofia from finding out the truth.

Tropes

  • Brought Down to Normal: Replacing the jewel in Sofia's amulet with a normal lookalike means Sofia is magic-less and she can't use her powers anymore; she can't understand Clover and the animals, and she won't shrink. It's that moment she realizes something is wrong with her amulet and has to get Cedric that instant.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: Cedric comes within a mere second to revealing he stole Sofia's amulet and she's wearing a fake. When she tells him her amulet is not working, he makes her close her eyes so she doesn't know the truth.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Cedric put the Amulet on the minute he stole it from Sofia, not realizing that it ( actually, Elena) would curse him for stealing it from her.
  • Do Not Taunt Cthulhu: Cedric taking the Amulet of Avalor away from its chosen bearer was totally a bad idea as the very moment he puts it on, the amulet ( or rather, Elena) really starts screwing with him with a barrage of curses for every minor misdeed and powers for every little good deed.
  • Five Stages of Grief: Cedric hits all of them throughout the episode:
    • Denial: After getting the amulet's jewel, it ( or rather, Elena) begins to curse him due to being taken away from its bearer, and he denies it.
    • Anger: Too many curses make Cedric annoyed, and longs to have the blessings instead.
    • Bargaining: Cedric convinces Sofia to do good deeds, so he can gain powers from the amulet.
    • Depression: The amulet ( Elena) keeps cursing Cedric, and he is unable to take over Enchancia and breaks down.
    • Acceptance: Upon realizing Sofia really needs her amulet when she tells him she can't use her powers anymore, he finally gives in and returns the amulet to her.
  • Good Is Not Soft: The amulet takes and this and Only the Chosen May Wield beyond maximum levels. Once the jewel is stolen without warning and it immediately recognizes Cedric as not its true wielder, the amulet proceeds to repeatedly curse him. It would later be revealed that Elena was the one inside the amulet, screwing with Cedric until he gave it back.
  • Loophole Abuse: Sofia refuses to give Cedric her amulet because she made a solemn promise with her father to never take it off, no matter what. To get around it, Cedric uses a spell to switch the amulet's jewel with a fake lookalike while she's not looking, kicking off the plot of the episode.
  • "No Peeking!" Request: When Sofia comes in and tells Cedric her amulet is not working and asks him to fix it, he has her close her eyes while he switches the amulets back, as if he doesn't want her to find out he stole it.
  • Oh, Crap!: Sofia when she realizes she cannot use her amulet's powers and has to get Cedric.
  • Only the Chosen May Wield: Cedric stealing the Amulet from its chosen bearer triggers its safeguard to constantly curse the thief, and it only stops when returned. It is ultimately revealed later on in the series that the safeguard is likely just Elena trolling Cedric in an attempt to get him to return it to Sofia
  • Poor Communication Kills: When the amulet makes Cedric a giant when Sofia is distracted, he gains a voice so loud and booming the whole village can hear...except for Sofia.
  • Pun-Based Title: The title is based on Chuck Berry's hit single "Johnny B. Goode".
  • Replaced with Replica: Cedric uses a spell which swaps the jewel in the Amulet of Avalor with a replica that is powerless. This causes Cedric to be repeatedly cursed for stealing the amulet from its chosen bearer without warning Because Elena is Trolling Cedric, while Sofia is Brought Down to Normal.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: When Sofia goes to talk to Clover but he only makes rabbit noises, this causes her to realize she can't use her powers anymore and her amulet is somehow malfunctioning. She was right to say something was wrong with it, but she didn't know she was not wearing the real amulet, which is now in Cedric's possession which she is unaware of.
  • Undying Loyalty: The amulet takes this up to eleven here; once the jewel is taken away from its chosen bearer, it places curses on whoever stole it and won't stop until the jewel is returned, again this is likely a result of Elena screwing around with the thief until they give it back to it's rightful owner.
  • We Need a Distraction: While Cedric goes into the village with Sofia, he sends Wormwood to distract Clover and the animals with long-winded talks so they are unable to reach out to Sofia and cannot warn her she isn't really wearing her amulet.
