Recap / Sofia The First S 1 E 17 The Amulet And The Anthem

Go To

Sofia is asked to sing the Enchancia anthem at the harvest festival, but when she gets cursed by her amulet by boasting to her friends, she must find a way to make things right.

Tropes:

  • Acquired Situational Narcissism: Sofia gets this briefly when she is chosen to be the anthem singer. Her amulet punishes her by cursing her to randomly croak like a frog.
  • An Aesop: Actions speak louder than words, especially when it comes to solving a problem.
  • Big Damn Heroes: The amulet summons Belle in Sofia's time of desperation, who reveals Sofia didn't yet make things right with Ruby and Jade, which causes her to realize how to break the curse which also restores her confidence.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Cedric's reaction when Sofia reveals she's confident again and doesn't need to give him the amulet to fix the curse and she realizes what really has to be done.
  • Curse Escape Clause: Cedric pretends he can break the curse if Sofia hands the amulet to him, when in reality, he's secretly using her fear to her advantage to use its power to take over Enchancia. Played straight when the Amulet summons Belle, who reveals she still hasn't made things right with Ruby and Jade, thus Sofia decides to let them be the Anthem Singers in her place, which in turn breaks the curse for real.
  • Deus ex Machina: In Sofia's moment of total desperation and worry, the amulet summons Belle, who reveals she still hasn't made things right with Ruby and Jade, which in turn restores her confidence.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Cedric's plan was to use Sofia's fear to blackmail her into giving him the amulet, but he didn't know the amulet would summon the Disney Princesses in her time of distress; in this case, the amulet summons Belle who helps Sofia Take a Third Option which in turn leads to her politely denying Cedric because she's no longer upset and knows what is to be done.
  • I Gave My Word: One of the times Cedric asks for Sofia's amulet and she has to remind him she promised her dad to never ever take it off.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Sofia felt this way when she realizes boasting to Ruby and Jade is what cursed her.
  • Near-Villain Victory: Cedric doesn't care if Sofia refuses to take off her amulet, because he plots to use her fear and desperation to the point she'll become so uncertain that she'll have to hand it to him. If the amulet hadn't summoned Belle to help her when it did, then Cedric would've won.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Sofia feels so honored to be the anthem singer that she becomes stuck-up and vain like Amber, to the point of even boasting to Ruby and Jade. This causes the amulet to curse her.
  • Take a Third Option: Sofia can either keep her croaking curse, or hand the amulet to Cedric, which she can't do because she promised never to take it off. A visit from Belle allows Sofia to take a surprising third option: she lets Ruby and Jade be the anthem singers in her place, which in turn breaks her curse.
