Clark and Chloe discover that Tobias, a former classmate of theirs, has the ability to detect other Kryptonite-infected people, and that Tobias is being used by Lex to locate metahumans so Lex can have them abducted and experimented on.
Tropes present in the episode:
- Bullet Catch: Lana finds a bullet that Clark caught, then tells Clark that she would understand if he was meteor-infected.
- By the Eyes of the Blind: Tobias was blinded in the 2005 meteor shower, but can see meteor-infected people.
- Disability Superpower
- Chekhov's Gun: One of the few times real guns are involved in the series. Tobias states outright that his father kept guns around the house, but Dr. Bethany is armed with a fancy-looking ray gun (likely intended for meteor freaks only), making it absolutely clear that the bullet Lana finds stuck in a metal plate in a cupboard behind her could only have come from the normal gun. Which she was NOT pointing there.
- Conveniently Timed Distraction: A sudden gust of wind occurs just before a laptop disappears. Super-breath can be convenient.
- Exact Words: Swearing on the soul of your unborn child is a weak oath if said child does not exist.
- Fantastic Racism: Chloe says, "The meteor freaks I know don't exactly win Nobel Prizes." (See What Have I Become?.)
- Make It Look Like an Accident: Daniel's death.
- Memory-Wiping Crew: No skid marks, and Daniel has no memory of his abduction.
- Mind over Matter: Daniel Kim has telekinetic powers.
- Mundanger: Dr. Bethany has no special powers.
- Strapped to an Operating Table: Chloe, after being abducted by Lex's men.
- Taking the Bullet: Clark saves Lana from an electromagnetic burst fired by Dr. Bethany.
- Mind over Matter: Daniel has this power.
- What Have I Become?: Chloe learns she is meteor-infected.
- What Measure Is a Non-Human?: Chloe ponders this question when she learns she is what she sometimes calls a meteor freak.
- Villain of the Week: Dr. Robert Bethany.
