Clark meets Simone, a seductive young woman who uses a gem to make Clark fall in love with her. When Milton Fine resurfaces in Honduras, Lex heads down to confront him with his true identity.


Tropes present in the episode:

  • Bond Breaker: Lex hired Simone to help break up Clark and Lana so he could make his move on Lana.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: In the climax, Simone has Clark attempt to murder Lex.
  • Break His Heart to Save Him: In the final act, Clark decides that he can't keep hurting Lana, so he breaks up with her.
    Clark: I don't know any other way to say it, but the truth is, my feelings for you have changed.
    Lana: Clark, I want you to look me in the eye and tell me that you don't love me.
    Clark: [Beat] I don't love you.
  • Compelling Voice: Simone's gem allows her to make others do whatever she tells them to do.
  • Double Standard Rape: Female on Male / Double Standard Rape Scifi: Clark is in the process of having sex with Simone at her command while under her influence, which would be rape, only interrupted by Lana walking in on them, but he isn't shown to be traumatized by the experience when he's back in his right mind.
  • Femme Fatale: Simone uses a gem to make Clark fall in love with her.
  • Me's a Crowd: Near the end of the episode, Fine/Brainiac makes duplicates of himself and commands them to collect more viruses.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Played for Laughs. Chloe's reaction after she knocks out Martha (who has been hypnotized by Simone to make sure Lois doesn't try to stop her and Clark).
    Chloe: Oh my God, I just knocked out Martha Kent!
    Lois: Hello? The woman was about to wallpaper her living room with my brain matter!
  • Tap on the Head:
    • Clark executes this on Lois when she tries to stop him and Simone from leaving.
    • Chloe knocks Martha out with a wooden instrument when she has Lois at gunpoint.
  • Villain of the Week: Simone, a Femme Fatale with a hypnotic gem.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Clark breaking up with Lana will result in an emotionally fragile Lana beginning a toxic relationship with Lex.
